2007 4X4 locking hubs

I just purchased a 2007 SD, 4X4 with locking hubs. I have an electronic switch in the cab that put's the truck into 4 wheel drive not the shifter on the floor. Now my question is, why do the hubs say "LOCK" and "AUTO" on them. My frend has a 2001 but he has a shifter on the floor to place the truck into 4 wheel and his hubs say "LOCK" and "UNLOCK". What is the difference? The manual doesn't make sence to me. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

The ESOF(Electronic Shift On the Fly) system installed in your truck with the hubs set to AUTO uses a vacuum to lock the hubs . Now if there was a leak in the system for your hubs, you can get out, rotate the hubs to LOCK and drive off in 4x4. It's a manual back-up to the ESOF system.

Your buddy has the old school 4X4 system. Some here like the ESOF others hate it. Pick your flavor.

Thanks that makes alot of sence. Now with the old 4X4 "LOCK - UNLOCK". When they where put into "UNLOCK" the front wheels where free wheeling, is this the case with the new ESOF?

Thanks for the fast reply.

If you have the **** in 4x2, the front hubs are free-wheeling, when the hub **** is in "auto".

If you have it in "lock", they are locked no matter what, obviously

So to dredge up an older thread and add to it...(a search led me here)...the above statements are what I always thought was correct, but I found this post after being told by more than a few people to ALWAYS engage the hubs manually...I call bull****, but are they right? I always thought they were just a backup if the auto's didn't kick in. A couple of the guys went so far as to tell me it makes their truck FULLY LOCKED...as if they had a Detroit installed....funny how some people misread the instructions...

You are correct on this. They are just a backup system.

Correct, under normal circumstances, you should only have to manually lock the hubs when the vacuum system (or the hubs themselves) fail, or when you are already stuck and they won't engage because the truck isn't moving.
