I am down 1.5/2 qts of oil. Last oil change was 2 weeks and 1000 miles.
No noticeable outward leaks. Oil pan gasket replace 12 months ago. Never had any engine overhaul- header add ons 3 years ago. We're at 187K miles. Suggestions on cause?
What should the exhaust be like? What am I looking for with the exhaust?AM I looking for specific color and smell, both? This may have been sneaking up on me so I need a standard to compare it to.. BTW I run synthetic oil which may make is harder to smell ... and I have noticed decreased power on uphill acceleration

Oily exhaust "smells" a bit oily and is blue/white in color. Under normal conditions, your exhaust should be without color, especially during summer when the temp is usually warm.
Start truck take off oil cap see if have any puffing . Or oil pushing into pcv valve. I had #8 cylinder die on me ( always seem to be 8),and at first it acted just like you said oil consumption and proformance loss. By second oil change was pushing oil out of air filter box. But and I say but I'm not saying that is your problem.

LAst oil fill was 5qts + a full filter before install. Started her up then opened oil cap- no puffing. Revved the engine a bit a blew out what looked like water with carbon (a bit of black residue) from the exhaust. No exhaust color- no cloudy whitish blue. Idle is right on the nut. What's next? Compression check.?

Dutch, get rid of the synthetic oil. Use any quality brand of your choice in a 5w-30 of regular dino oil. My pick would be Havoline for the extra moly but there are other good ones out there. If that doesn't stop it, go to Rotella T 15w-40. The reason for nixing the synthetic is that your engines rings are at the end of their service life and lack the tension to keep synthetic in the engine. The dino oils don't have those issues.

This happened to me too...Im not sure what cylinder it was though...
I have the same problem. I have checked my air filter box and have a very small amount of oil in the bottom. I changed my air filter about a year ago and it is not soaked / caked with oil. But i eat about a quart every 3 - 4 weeks. If it is the piston rings, how bad would that be to replace? I have emissions in less than a month too.
