Hi folks, just bought a 64 custom cab long bed. My tail, brake and panel lights are out,so I'm thinking fuse.I looked at the three under the dash at the light switch and took them out and they seem to be ok.The owners maual says it's a 2 amp fuse that runs these lights. Now,could it be a bad connection at the fuse or a bad fuse that still looks good?? Also, which one of the three is it? The turn signals work so I know it's not the bulbs. And does anyone know what size engine the custom cab long bed has in it.It's a six 3 speed. Thanks for any help on this.
Welcome to the list! If you post the info from the warranty plate on the driver's side door, we can tell you quite a lot about your truck, if it is original to the truck.
I apologize, I didn't address your lighting problem! I would start at the lights and work towards the front of the truck. Turn the lights on (just the parking lights) and check for voltage at the bulb. If you have voltage, check for bad grounds. If not, start tracing the wires back and look for bad wires and the like.
Yes, a fuse CAN look good and be bad. Check it for continuity with a multi meter. or, if you don't have one, take an old pigtail with lamap in it. Mine's from an old chevy (may it RIP - rust in pieces) appropriately enough! Put one lead on the contact you want to test, and ground the other. Light means power! Since on these old trucks we rarely check anything but power off or on, it's a good tool to have, and easier to use than a voltmeter.
Good luck, and keep us informed.
Thanks John, I think I'll try replacing the fuses first then go from there. There is juice to the tail lights as the turn signals work and they were working just the other day. I will post the door plate asap this weekend. She is a beauty from Tennessee and I live in New York.
