No my friend the carb design is a Q-jet style carb...that means everything about the carb is a Q-jet except the butterflys...they are a squarebore design..
If the design of the base plate determined the style of carb...how do you explain the fact that there are square-bore and spread-bore Holleys??
The design of the carb and the style of the base plate are two very different things!!
If the baseplate determined the style.. then they would be called spreadbores and not Q-jets!
Not all Q-jets are spreadbores and not all spreadbores are Q-jets!
The Edelbrock is not a Q-jet design, it's a Carter AFB. Go through Edelbrock, they say their kits work for the Performer and the stock AFB.
And I know all spreadbore carbs are not Q-jets. Ford made one, Chyrsler had it's own, but I'd like you to show me a Quadrajet that isn't a spreadbore.
All i was saying is that the Performer IS NOT a quadrajet because all quadrajets are spreadbore. Even if everything about it was q-jet (which it isn't) besides the baseplate, it still would not be a quadrajet because you wouldn't be able to go to any local parts house, buy a Q-jet base gasket, and install your carb. That there is enough of a difference to warrant a different model designation.
And your reference to Holley producing both squarebore and spreadbore carburetors is totally off base. The Q-jet is the model name for a carburetor produced by rochester (and carter under license). That model just happens to be a spreadbore carburetor. That doesn't mean that they couldn't also produce a squarebore carb (but it would be a different model from quadrajet)
Following your initial line of logic that would be like me saying that since the Autolite 4100 was a squarebore, then all Autolite carbs are squarebore. It just doesn't make sense.
I thought that the current Edelbrock carbs were a newer version of this carb...I guess I was wrong... but at one point Edelbrock did make Q-jet carbs...
Well, you are correct, edelbrock does and did produce their version of the Quadrajet. I think i said that earlier, but i'm not sure. Anyway, the carburetor he says he has is Edelbrock's version of the Carter AFB.
So, I installed an O2 sensor to see what was really going on. Despite the fact that Edelbrock says the stock set up is "lean", I was running rich, so I change the jet and metering rods to a slightly leaning combination and the O2 sensor now shows mid 15's which should be about right for maximum mileage. I detailed the change in a different thread. We'll see what the mileage is on the next tank. Stomping on it is definatley a problem as the secondaries are pouring gas into the intake. Got to change that next.
Schit, that's nothin......I'm getting around 27 in mine. And I'm a high-boy 390/C6 with 35s and 4.10s and cruising at 70mph.
I agree.....I call Bullschit too!
That is nothing.. I've been getting about 45mpg in mine.... It hasn't ran in 6 years and I've been dragging it from house to house but I'm still getting 45mpg
