I replaced the shifter linkage bushings and the shifter is still VERY loose. What else could it be? I have heard of some things in the steering shaft that wear out that are a complete pain to change...could these things be the culprit? What are they?
Just out of curiousity how long ago was your last trans rebuild? You could try to disconnect the linkage from the trans and feel for play at the trans input levers. You could have worn shift forks. But this is a curiousity thing so I could be way off.
1) On the shifter tube at the top where the shifter lever fits in the little ball socket wears down. The factory doubled plated this area but hell it's 30+ years old. You can if skilled braze it up and redrill the hole but you need to make sure it's just right. Not a fun job.
2) At the bottom of the tube theres little cutouts the move the column forks these nubs round off over time.
Look back a few months I posted a link to a blown up pict of a bronco's column which is the same design but not sure the same over all fit.
