Shifter rod

The shifter on my 1995 F150 auto was very sloppy. While in gear, the shifter and the indicator would fall between neutral to 2nd without changing or disengaging the trans. Based an older FTE thread, I found the 2 torq head bolts at the back of the shifter rod. They were so loose I could move em with my fingers. I tightened up the bolts and now it is very tight when shifting between the gears(that's why I love this website). However, the shifter is still very loose when pulling it forward to shift. If my tilt wheel is up, I can touch the back of the steering wheel with the shifter. I've got the column covers off and can't find anything loose or worn that would be an obvious cause of it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I just went through this with my '94. One torx head screw fell out and the other one broke off.

There is pretty strong little coil spring that goes in there, right where the torx head screws hold the one part to the other. My best guess would be that this coil spring is gone or broken. It would be Ford part group number 7379, the Ford garage gave me a parts printout.

Thanks alot 88n94. I took the torq head bolts out of the bracket that connects the shift rod to the shift linkage. The spring you spoke of was there and was not broken. If you or anyone has anymore thoughts, I'm all ears.

Thanks

Anybody have an idea of why the shifter would be so loose?

Me again. The piece that connects the shift lever with the other piece down by the affore mentioned spring is held on by two clamps that take the same size torx bit. Either the shaft inside there must be stuck so that it can't spring back. Or possibly something with the shift lever. I would just take things apart and investigate. I don't know if you dropped the steering column before, but you likely will have to to do this. Hope this helps.

I have had issues with the shifter in my 92 f-150 in the past. This is what I did.

First, I tightened the bolts, "that helped to remove some the slop."
The shifter was still loose with every thing tight. I then replaced the Shift Tube Bushings. That made it nice and tight.

I still had issues with the truck not shifting in Park and also never into 1st gear. I ended up breaking the Shift Tube in half slamming it into park.

I replaced the Shift Tube. That made it feel even better but it would still not shift into 1st gear.

I then replaced the Shift Cable that went from the column to the transmission. OMG! What a difference! Smooth and goes into all the gears.
