Exclamation make it rumble

hey i got a 94 ford 150, with the inline 6, 2wd, 5 speed, i put a flowmaster muffler on(30 series with delta flow) and it isnt near the sound im going for. i took the whole muffler off and just ran it with the cad converter and it wasnt even that loud without the muffler, would a high preformance cad solve my problem? or does any one have any hints to help be noticed.......you cant have to loud!

~~~~i also kno that if i just run the headers on it that it will sound like a dragster, how ever i have emissions tes comming soon and wanna keep it leagal, well barley leagal
Sorry, there's nothing you can do to a I6 to make it rumble like an V8... except transplant an V8 under the hood.
The V8 is a comfort? Yeah.. I never get tired of blowing away those obnoxious sounding civic's off a stop light. They're loud but that's usually all they got.
You can make the I6 loud, just put a high flow cat on it. But it still won't sound like a V8.
for a new guy you have a real attitude.
my 300 has cat convertors then straight pipe that goes to a 45 degree bend than out the side.
louder but not too abnoxious.
most of these trucks get about the same gas mileage regardless of engine.
my buddy has an i6 in his jeep. headers with straight pipe true duals. You have a 6 cylinder, expect a 6 cylinder sound.
TractorM3,
My 302 does better at the pump then my 300-6 ever did. What I did to my 300-6 was run true dual glasspacks with no cats. I know it won't work in your emissions controlled area but it worked good for me. It sounded great at idle and mid RPM's but nearer to the top it sounded a bit "ricey".
If loud is what you want, straight pipes are your option, unless of course you live in a state with emissions inspections. Then, bare minimum, you're gonna have the cats. Don't forget, though, and read up on your state's requirements, you may bump up against an emission that some seem to forget is sometimes part of local laws. NOISE emissions. It isn't going to bother you a lot sitting in the cab, but the people around you really won't appreciate straight pipes. I speak from experience, including paying a $54 fine for straight tubes on my VW. While it doesn't rumble, it does sound like a couple of very pissed off Harleys sitting side by side. What you'll get with straight pipes is more of a pop than a rumble. Put a lot of pops together (high RPM) and what you get sounds more like something's coming apart. Some back-pressure is a good thing. After dropping two of 4 exhaust valves in the VW, melting the heads, and dropping a 3 day old set of pistons/cylinders in the trash, I decided short open headers were not a good idea. They look swell on dragsters when they're spitting blue flames from unburnt nitrous and alchohol, but remember, that engine only has to go 1/4 mile, and it's done for the day. Open exhaust normally gets you one of two things: A.) Large repair bill for burnt valves. B.)Large fine when the local yocal is having a bad day, and a trip back to have it inspected to prove you put the muffler back on.
As those before me pointed out, accept the fact you have an I6, which is a good engine. It just never was meant to go in a sports car or anything that's supposed to make people look before they can see you. It's a good strong utility engine, not a high performance racing engine. Unmuffled, it's a bellower, not a rumbler. You're gonna get 3 beats per revolution, not 4. Despite the little 4 banger rice burners are loud, to me, they just sound like giant pissed off bumblebees. You can turn up a lot more RPM with a small 4 than you can with a large 6 or 8, unless it's an opposing 4 like a VW with a large bore and short stroke, which is why they often sound like a bee coming down the road.
Dunno why you think 300 cubic inches is going to be a lot more efficient than 302 cubic inches, as far as the mileage is concerned. I've consistently gotten 21-22 MPG highway outta my '92 5.0L M5OD in the past. I'm currently bulldogging the restoration of that number.
I'm not lowballing your question or intent. Just trying to give some sound (excuse the pun) advice.
LMC Truck sells a cat-back system for your truck. It comes with Fart Pipes like the little type of car you mentioned above. I don't know what they would sound like on a full sized engine though.
Coming from LMC, I would expect it to be decent.
well im sorry i didnt mean to have an attitude twards any one. as for blowing the little hondas away, yeh even i can do that now and then, the best is in my friends power stroke, with preformance injectors. it smokes like a bat out of hell when floored!!
so high preformance cat will help out right?
i know ill never get the v8 sound but its not exactly going to be whimpy.
~so i guess you guys are telling me the 6 and 8 get the same mileage roughly.....how about towing bc i haul a trailer alot
I put a 3 inch magnaflow converter on my 93 f150, followed by 3 ft of 3 inch pipe and a raptor 3 inch turbo mufler with a turn down after it. Lets just say i have to turn my truck off at the drive thru so they can hear my order at the mic. Loud enough for you?
