Has anyone put a locking gas cap on their super duty. My neighbor came home from work on Saturday at 2:00 am and found 3 guys with a gas can getting ready to steal gas out of my truck in my driveway. He chased them and got a license plate but it was a stolen plate on the car. It has been years since I have heard of gas being stolen but with todays gas prices it doesn't surprise me that it will become popular. I was thinking of putting a locking gas cap and removing the V10 emblems off the front fenders so they wouldn't know if it's gas or diesel.
I heard that you cannot siphon gas out of today's vehicles because of a check valve in the neck that is there to prevent leakage in the event of a rollover. This effectively prevents a siphon tube from making its way down to the tank.
I bought a locking gas cap to protect my 44 gallon investment ( @3.32 gal. ) and then found out this "info".
I always take my dog for a walk in an area where I park just off the road. Often after I drove away after the walk I would notice my gauge showing lower but thought it was just the usual faulty Ford guage. When gas shot up I put on a locking cap and I am now getting much improved in town mileage. I guess I was being ripped off. I have a 2000 F-350 so don't know if there is a check valve. It might not be that hard to punch out with a long flexible rod.
I got my locking gas cap at Checker auto parts. When looking up the part number, make sure you try whatever they give you first... I got the wrong one a Napa, and Advance Auto parts...
The guy at Checker said there are 2 differen types of Ford caps. So he told me to try it before I bought it. It was something like $17, but that's cheap insurance. Check valve or not...
I put a locking gas cap on mine just when gas initially went up, and someone decided they neede my gas more than I and drilled a 1/4 hole in my tank and let it flow into thier gas can. Moral of the story - the locking cap does not stop those on a mission.
I got a locking cap from Ford. have seen thiefs cut the fuel lines at the fuel filter, at this time I've repaired three such trucks, so if they want the gas they will get it. Chris
