Anyone have a good idea on how to get off a LOCKING gas cap that I don't have the key for.......? I just bought the truck and the key that is supposed to be for the caps DOES NOT WORK. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated seein as how I can't drive because I can't put gas in it haha..
I have heard of people taking a drill bit and drilling the lock out. I think I would get under the truck and take the large rubber hose loose before you did something like that though, so if anything fell down the pipe it would not go into the tank.
Drilling was my first thought but didn't want to get any metal shavings in the tank.. I didnt even think about the hose haha. I might give it a try tonight
2nd channel locks, just brake off the locking mech assy, and the rest will unscrew like a normal cap.
NEVER DRILL out a gas cap, drillings in the tank will be the least worry if the fumes ignite from the drill's brushes! Reminds me of some kid checking his atv's gas with a cig lighter, he lost all hair on his face but was lucky did not burn his eyes out.
I did drill but I disconnected the hoses about 20 min before. The caps were kind of old so it didn't take much.. Also got a brakelight switch while I was there to fix a taillight situation. Anyone know where to find an "e-brake adjuster plate" I'm not sure if that's exactly what it's called but it connects the pedal to the rear wheels??
I have always tapped a screwdriver into the lock slot. Then pry the outer the top off. It leaves the inner screw piece intact. Very fast and easy to do and it's clean, no drilling.

We had a thread on that about 6 months ago, but I don't remember if they found someone to who sold the pieces. I usually just take metal I have laying around and repair it myself.

You guys all went through extraordinary measures unless it was a metal locking cap. The plastic caps come off like jelly when you use a large flat tip screwdriver.
