black exhaust on acceleration

I have an 03 250 6.0 PSD, 45K mi. I recently noticed black smoke on acceleration, particularly on passing on the freeway, is this normal? Not having any real hesitation. Let me know. thanks

All the black smoke is, is basicly unburnt fuel. this is happening because when you get on it to accelerate your injecting more diesel into the engine and the air fuel mixture is running alittle richer equaling black smoke. majority of the diesels out there that are racing and competing in sled pulls blow huge amounts of black smoke because there pumping max fuel to get max power.
Personaly i think black smoke is awsome.

yeah I don't have a problem with it as long as the performance is still there. I was hoping it isn't a clogged injector or egr. thanks for the reply

Like wolfe1104 said it is unburned fuel that is getting burned in the exhaust. This is not a good thing. This causes higher egt's. Basically saying that there is not enough air flow for the amount of fuel that is being injected. Is your truck stock? If you are then this might be a problem. I can run in the highest level of my tuner and stomp on it from a dead stop and not blow any black smoke.

If it is a performance setup then some black smoke is typically a good thing as it goes easier on the tubo as aposed to white smoke

My buddy has a brand new F350 and did the edge tuner. When he puts it at the highest setting he definitley blows black smoke. I wasnt that impressed with his tune though.
We headed off last night, he has a F350 CC with 20" rims and 33" 13.5" wide tires and MBRP 4"Turbo back cat delete. I have F250 SC, with stock 17's and MBRP 4"Turbo back cat delete.
On a empty two lane road we went at it. He always launched better then me, probably because of the added grip of those tires. He would gain around 4-6 truck lengths on me and stay at about that. His truck was clearly faster, I just thought it would be much much more faster. I guess with the bigger rims tires and a crew cab, it really adds some weight.

Your thoughts on this tune?
sorry for the thread jacking

These are like two totally different trucks. The wheels, while may not seem like much, really add quite a bit of weight to the truck and getting it rolling in the first place. Dang inertia. Larger tires, crew cab versus your supercab, you didn't mention what bed config you guys have but this can also play into it. Your buddy's truck is probably about 8000#. He may have an issue with it as he really should be able to just walk away if all you have is the exhaust. Like I said, black smoke is NOT a good thing. More air is what is needed. Meaning denser cooler air. Better quality air. I can run my Banks 6 gun on the highest level and not smoke at all with it wide open. I have a crew cab long bed 350 with 35's on it.

NavyPowerstroker,
No black smoke??? Come on.... I have the big hoss bundle on mine and when set in speed loader, I blow smoke..not near as much as the other tuners, but I still belch black smoke. Its kinda cool :-) And yes, my EGTs are aound 1300 at the manifold, very acceptable. Short of this Do Dad stuff everyone is talking about, I cant flow anymore air then I currently am.

depends--are you running a tuner? have you changed your airfilter recently?
do you run any kind of fuel additive/conditioner to help clean your injectors?

I would think you wouldn't blow any smoke since your kit has the intercooler which will provide better air.

All the banks products for the6.0L. Tuner plus PDA, Full Banks Exhaust, ram air, techni cooler and fuel treatment and last but not least...a brand fuel and air filters.

I agree that no smoke is good...but some smoke is to be expected. The amount of smoke that I blow isnt anything near what a bully dog system would blow.

He has the short bed, as well as mine. Don't get me wrong he beat me pretty good, but it wasn't what I was expecting. With both have the 3.73 gearing. Ya the weight and size of the tires makes a big difference.
Tires= weight x 2, wheels = weight x 1.5 which all equals felt weight approximately. There is a lot more math involved in this. This is just a simplifcation.
So if his tires weigh 8lbs more each, it would be 8x2= 16 x4tires= 64lbs
rims weigh 10lbs more each, it woudl be 10lbs x 2 = 20 x 4 wheels =80lbs
So that is an additional 144lbs of felt weight added to the truck just on the weight of the tires/rims alone. Now his tires are taller than mine which basically makes his gears more like a 3.8-9 instead of 3.73. All effecting him negatively.

Now as far as the smoke, why does the edge of different levels of 'smoke'?
