I'm replacing the ball joints in my 76 f150 4x4 and think they may be too tight.
I torqued them to 100 ft. lbs. and have to use a great amount of force to turn the steering knuckles. I haven't assembled the knuckles yet. I've done ball joints before and don't remember any being tight like these ones. Did I torque these to tight?
I realize what the torque is butit just seems that the knuckles are too hard to turn. It's taking a great amount of force to turn those bad boys. It seems to me that they shouldn't require that much force. When I've done balljoints in the past they were never that tight.
If you tightened the top first you may not have enough clearance between the two ball joints. tighening the lower pulls everything up into place then the top nut locks the sleeve into place at the right height. If you tighten the top first you are fighting against the two ball joints.
