<!-- / message --><!-- no sigs except when logged in --><!-- controls --> I was thinking about trying to do a power steering swap on my 75 250 4x4 but the catch is that I would like to have a power steering box but keep the ram assist. Does anyone know of a way that I could do that? I have plans one day of throwing on 40 to 42" on the truck and my 350 with 35's is hard enough to turn as is, and it has good power steering. I like the idea of being able to grab the wheel on the 250 and just throwing it to turn, but I hate having to sit there for a hour while it spins. I posted this in the steering section a year ago and never got anything from it. Any help would be great.

I did a full power steering conversion to my 77 4x4 from a steering assist with control valve rod to an intergel power steering system. Works like a fricken dream. It took some work.
What is the ram assist? and why do you want to keep it?
just curious.
Mud
Your best bet would be to forgett the power steering assest and stick with the power steering box. It should have more than plenty power to turn your wheels and tires. Besides that power steering assest is nothing but junk (one of Fords Stupid Ideas)
yea that powr assist is junk. Howabout do the conversion and add actual hydro assist like the guys in thbe offroad forum have? I think ivanribic, fishman, and proliator have all done it.
I actually like the assist and for those that don't know, it is a ram that is on the axle and attaches to the tie rod to help the manual steering box and to make it easier to turn. it has been around forever and is the basis for things like the redneck ram setup that you can find online. I just want to have a tighter ratio in the steering box with the ease of turning the wheel. The reason that I want to keep it is so that it puts less strain on the frame at the steering box so that I don't have to worry about the frame cracking when I do put the bigger tires on the truck. all of the steering stress is on the axle tube and the tire rod instead of the frame with conventional power steering. I am just trying to find a way to integrate the ram assist into a power steering swap. similear to the way that the redneck ram assist is set up with out having to send a steering box to the company to have the box drilled out. what I am trying to do is basically the same as the hydro assist that ivan has, just trying to do it cheaper.
Ive seen guys that have used a regular PS box, and drilled tapped it, to power the ram, the only thing you'll need is a upgraded Steering pump. The stocker cant handle the upped stress...

I stand corrected.
where are you planning on hooking up the the 2 hydrolic lines from the ram after the box is mounted?
