ball joint installation trouble

hello, I just replaced upper and lower ball joints on my 2002 f350 srw 4x4, 7.3. the knuckle now seems tight and hard to move. you can see at the upper ball joint , the threaded part wants to move until the cotter pin stops it. I pumped some grease in and also re-did the nuts to proper torque. I did the lower nut first, then the top, then final torque on bottom as I had noticed one person mentioned on another thread. maybe helped a little, but still seems tough to turn the knuckle back and forth. is this common and might go away with some use? just dont want to go through putting it all back together to find I have trouble... thanks for any insight.

i was working it back and forth just now and the cotter pin sheared off. cant be good... maybe a defective ball joint, or I pressed it in wrong???

You got something messed up or the incorrect ball joints were sent to you. It should not slide back off the knuckle and shear off the pin...

I just removed that one and put another on (same part number, but some noticeable differences in numbers stamped on it and color of metal...) the newest one seems to be moving freely now. Ill put the knuckle back on now and see if alls good.

with the threaded part, I mean the post that the lock nut and cotter pin go on. the entire post was turning inside the lock nut until the cotter pin hit, then enough pressure from the cotter pin would get it to turn. sorry about my descriptions-- hard for me to put into words.

hopefully this will fix it!

thanks for the replys.

You just mean the stud is spinning when you are trying to torque it? It should you got it to keep from moving when you torque it down.

seems decent now

it was after I got the torque needed, when I turned the knuckle manually. I just put on the knuckle and torqued them down, happenned again. so I loosened and attempted again. seems fine now. the knuckle still takes quite a bit of effort to turn back and forth though. I'll keep a good eye on it as I begin driving...

its gonna be tight at first
stud should should basicly press itself into tapered hole
sometimes they spin but you should hold stud while you tighten or better yet try and apply pressure from back to keep stud still while you tighten nut

When I replaced mine the top ball joint stayed in place and I was able to torque it down with nothing extra. The bottoms tho did want to spin so I put a jack under it and made sure it had direct contact on the bottom face of the ball joint. With the clip in place so it wouldn't push it up through, I put pressure on it using the weight of the truck to hold it while I cranked it down.

Is the stud turning in the knuckle or with the knuckle?

Once it's torqued down, the stud shouldn't move.

The joints will be tight for a while then loosen up. Be sure that you're using the proper torque sequence that came with your ball joint instructions...
