yes it will fit 2 and 4 wheel drive as long as the 4 wheel drive is late 77-79, i have gotten into so many arguements over highboy narrow frame width it isnt funny......you can make them fit, but they wont just "fit"
there was a guy on ebay selling highboy steering conversions a while back, he always hinted he was going to start making a reasonably priced highboy gas tank, anybody remember this or have a way to reach this guy
He is the guy I got my PS conversion from, I had talked to him a while back and he still hadn't finished the tank. I talked with him about it and I was told it was a 38 gal tank taken from an 80's chevy suburban and with a few mods was going to fit perfect. I'll shoot him an email and see if he has completed anything on the tank recently.

How well did the ps conversion work for ya? and what did you have to do to the frame and crosmember.
LOL it is perfect and has worked great since I got it on there. He even made me a custom bracket that holds the saginaw PS pump and an A/C compressor(sanden) with the conversion plate. Reason for the custom bracket is with the PS box mounted where it needs to be the PS pump and box interfere with eachother if you run a saginaw pump. A ford pump will fit fine. YOu have to cut a chunk out of the crossmember( not really that big at all) and drill one hole I believe. Email me if you want some pics of it. I will eventually box my frame and the piece of the crossmember in later and may change over to the 78-79 4x4 box. The 2wd and 4wd boxes are same internally except for the longer output shaft the pitman arm atattches to and the 4x4 box has 4 mounting holes whereas the 2wd has 3, and i plan to maybe run even larger tires later on and hydro assist. You know never finished with any part of the truck except the gas tank when you top it off.
Sorry to jump in on the hijack wagon, but I will anyways !
I did my conversion on the ps with a 79 4x4 gearbox. I had to cut and box in the crossmember & box in the frame rail as well, but other than that, it was not really that hard. There are pictures in this gallery here starting on page 3: www.ryanrocketracing.com/GWAGON
This thread's a year old but I'll try posting anyway. I bought a 32-gallon Aerotank for my 1976 Highboy with the ~28" frame rail width. But my truck has an extra crossmember in front of the main rear crossmember, which makes the tank not fit. Anyone else run across that? I'd like to just wack it off but obviously I don't want to compromise the frame integrity. Thoughts? I posted a photo of it in my gallery. Thanks.
On a long bed you have to hack out a crossmember, on a SB it's not there just a little trimming on the back lip of the bed(where knowone can see). Other problem is their template is off and the filler neck is too low with where they place their mounting tabs on the sides. I cut my filler out and built it to fit. I thought it was just mine but I have a buddy that just ordered his and SAME PROBLEM!! So we cut the welds off the tabs and welded them back where they need to be for the filler to reach over the frame rail.
I haven't looked to see if I'm going to have issues with the filler neck yet...I'll most likely have a myriad of issues with all of it. Buh. So you think the frame will be just fine with that extra crossmember gone? I don't need to relocate it? Thanks for your quick reply yesterday that's awesome.
I'm sure ford had an idea for it being there but it should hold up without it, it's kind of a tiny one so you could drill the rivits and rebolt it in further forward ahead of the tank if it fits. I know the one main crossmember is cradled by the tank and I figure thats where most of your support is anyways.
I had what looked like a piece of angle iron mounted at the very rear of the frame, but now I just have that one main rear crossmember. I'm going to eventually get the same tank, because I can't find anywhere else to get a higher capacity tank to fit back there.
I know that all I did for mine was take a regular ford tank from the back and turned it 90 so the fill was at the back and extended the filler neck to fit. Its not real pretty and I did it 28 years ago or so but it did work. only thing was it filled slow.
Bucks77 I just finished up the 78-79 4x4 box mod myself and the box is ported for ram assist. I had the 2wd box on there with a bracket b4 and this works much better. I was enjoying your gallery so figured I'd share mine with you, haven't updated the one on here but here is a link to my Photobucket account. Also just added a flexalite dual electric fan setup. still working out all the little bugs and things that aren't just right but coming along. http://s85.photobucket.com/albums/k51/Crewzin70/
