FYI: I measured between the inside frame rails and it measures 27 3/4 inches.
I didn't realize that the frame was that narrow. I will have to get out there and look at what kind of room that I have again. I thought that the frame was 33 in.... are you talking about from the inside of the lower part of the c channel of the frame? in that case I can see that. I think that the tank will work being that the top of the tank that measures 31 in should slide into the channel and the tank itself should be narrow enough to fit between the channel.. I have a mustang gas tank in the back yard that I will prob be trying out some time this week to see what kind of demensions that I am working with. what is the model number for the tank from aerotanks.com?

They didn't give me a confirmed part # they send you a paper that has the specifications of the width between your frame rails and that it is the narrow frame and also has a crosmember in the center of it. Also states what yr truck you have, basically all the specifics on your allpication and you agree to it, sign it and send it back, they build your 32 gallon tank and charge your credit card.
Yes, the measurement I took was from the very inside edge of the C channel, the shortest measurement. I took that measurement to do my research to see if I could get anything to fit without cutting the frame or the tank. I really don't want to have to move crossmemebers or cut the frame, but the large rear cross member I'm afraid is gong to have to be relocated to fit a tank. I want a tank that is at least 30 gallons because my truck is going to suck the gas.

The aero tank has a slot built into it to wrap around that rear crossmember. Without moving it or going around it you don't get the volume you need to justify a tank swap. I had tried to keep it in front of that crossmember with my own measurments and have a custom tank built and it wasn't worth the cash and came out a better deal to just buy from aero.
460 Crew: I agree with you. I think I would have much more time and money if I made a custom tank, move the crossmemeber, and who knows what else. I took a look at your gallery pic (nice truck by the way) and It looks like that tank mounted in there pretty well. How much did the tank cost you if you don't mind me asking? The aerotank website doesn't list it. I haven't called them yet. Also, what additional parts are needed (according to their website)
Only extra parts were some washers to shim it up so it was perfect over the top of the frame rail for the filler neck. All the other parts hose clamps ,filler hoses, vent hoses new adjustable sending unit that works with the guages and wiring. It was even plumbed for FI if i planned to add a system later. I have to admit I had one problem I think they mounted the tank hanging tabs in the wrong spots as the filler neck opening was right in the middle of the frame rail so I cut out the neck and welded in a new one that was the right lenth to compensate and 90'd out right above the frame. Fills perfect with no problems,I'm pretty sure i just got the oddball tank that got f-ed up, thats the usual for me so I didn't even bother to call them up and complain. Other than that i have been completely happy with it, except that I should of ordered mine with the skid plate included.

I'm pretty sure I would probably be the same boat as you regarding parts that are screwed up. Sounds like my luck. Well, sounds like you have had good luck with the tank, so I will probably get the same tank. The more I think about trying to fabricate my own or try to make something else fit, I can see it would probably cost me in the long run more than If I would just buy that tank. Thanks for the info.
460, is there any way that you can get a pic in your profile of what you are talking about for the tank filler neck and where did you get the one that you put in the tank. how hard was it to install the tank? sorry for all of the questions, just I have been looking for a tank for the truck for a while and I don't want anything that is going to be to good to be true. Thanks for the answers.

i have a 73 f250 high boy and when i baught the truck it had a 50 gallon steel tank mounted in the bed its just like the tank that is on a reefer semi trailer.
I Tried to snap a few pics but nothing really is exposed to see, I would have to take the bed off again. The filler neck after it was cut off was the right angle to weld back on. I can't really explain it on here I guess pics would be better if I could get some. All in all the tank was perfect except for that which was easily fixed. I'll PM you with more info.
I just got on chat with them and the person didn't know what the demintions were. they just said that it would fit both 2 and 4 whel drives. I have heard that before...

yes it will fit 2 and 4 wheel drive as long as the 4 wheel drive is late 77-79, i have gotten into so many arguements over highboy narrow frame width it isnt funny......you can make them fit, but they wont just "fit"
there was a guy on ebay selling highboy steering conversions a while back, he always hinted he was going to start making a reasonably priced highboy gas tank, anybody remember this or have a way to reach this guy
