I have the all famous odometer black out syndrome that has progressivly gotten worse. I have read mixed thing about when removing the cluster to fix it they keys have to be reprogrammed? Is this true or not? Im looking to fix the problem but this is the only vehicle and way to get around here so if I do this and the keys have to be reprogrammed im pretty much screwed.
Its a 99. A few places while checking it out on google is where I seen the key thing. A gave it a shot but had trouble getting the dash piece that goes around the cluster off on the side by the vent. I had the headlight **** off as well. Everything came apart well but once I got around to that area it was damn near impossible to get loose. Ill try again later I guess.
the key is only a problem if you put a NEW dash in it. i think the key memory is tied to the recorderd miles (odometer, etc). it gets a little difficullt to get the final pieces out, just takes a litle time and patience.
I think if your truck is a 2000 model or older, the anti theft was optional, 2001 and up the anti theft was standerd. When you replace the instrument cluster on the 2001 truck, it will need to have the anti theft reset by the dealer. If you will need to order an instrument cluster in either case, the VIN Code, and mileage are required to make sure you get the right one, and two so no odomiter rollback is going on. The new cluster will have the mileage installed. I dont know how the milage is retreived from a bad odomiter. Dealer might be able to get it.
Well did the repair yesterday.... Odometer is brighter then the times before that it would stay on. while i was in there i checked the other solders on the same line for the pins and the 2 right next to the one i repaired looked a little funky so i did them too. I was about to search and/or post about a goast wiper that sometimes came on when i put the turn signal on to turn right but so far it hasnt happen since i resoldered the 3 pins. Coincidence, maybe, but i hope its not and i found a fix for another problem that these great trucks seem to have.
Good job fjmaze!!....i took mines apart and pretty simple...checked around for cold soder points and they all seem new and fine....i hooked everything back and great seems to work....now after while of driving...sucker looses a lil bit of light and then goes dark..but now when i tap on it it comes back alive.....question, could it be the cable being loose to the pins? should i crazzy glue it? freaking driving me insane! jeje
hey Deltasoft, did u use a magnifying glass to look at the solder points?
you cant really see it with the naked eye unless u've had the 6 million dollar man rebuild...LOL...I would take it apart and resolder it anyway. I doubt its the pin.Good luck.
