looking at a 97 PSD 5spd

Is a 97 PSD a good truck to buy? I found one with 110k and a 5 speed. I want to tow a horse trailer. Will the transmission hold up? Should I keep looking for a newer truck?

Go for it. The tranny should be more than up to the task.

A 5 spd PSD is a work horse. The tranny will tow 16k all day every day. The only weak point is the DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) when it goes south on you. Just replace it with a SMF (Single Mass Flywheel) like a LUK and your good to go. If you are looking tow then buy it, this truck is made for towing, and does not have very many miles on it.

Different truck same question

I went to look at the truck. It has been rode hard and put away wet. I found another 97 PSD with an automatic and 197k. Crew Cab 4WD. Well taken care of. runs and drives well. It has some play in the steering. The trans fluid looks ok.

What is the word on this truck?

Thanks!

Same price for both. I have a trade and they are treating me well on that.

id still go with the 5spd myself, i dont do any towing, but if the time comes ill have it though. as for being put up hard and wet. i bought a truck last year the same one that is sick right now cause of wiring. but she had 200k miles on it for an ex oilfield truck, ive put some hard miles on her though since then. as for what ive replaced in this order: starter, tires, SMF clutch kit, intake, other than fuel and oil changes thats it, and almost have 247k miles on it. if the wiring hadnt decided to do this she still would run like hell but for now she is sick, got to get to work on her. thanks Lance

thats just my opinion though 5spd vs Auto , id take 5 spd

Price on the two trucks?

How much moolah for the trucks? Just curious because they are getting harder to find. Guys who have them are holding on to them. The 5 speed ZF tranny is well-known for it's strength and longevity, whereas the E4OD(automatic) tranny is considered a weak point in these trucks unless it's specially built by someone who knows all the problem areas on the inside and special measures have been taken to make the tranny strong and long-lasting(costs about $3,500).

i wouldnt pay 12k for either of em.
what are they?
crewcabs, standard cabs?

nice tires rims?

12k is a pretty much flawless truck. with average miles. 14k+ is a low mileage truck that is flawless.

you are pretty close to texas. its nothing to fly there and drive back with a rig. dont limit yourself to your home town.

i flew from florida to san antonio to get mine. i also looked for 9 months and i knew it was the one i wanted when the time came. had everything i wanted i flew 2 days later to get it. come up with a list of what you want in one and start looking when you see it you will know.

ebay
trucktrader.com
autotrader.com
forddirect.com
i searched those religiously for months. best of luck

you will be happier in the long run if you do it that way.

edit: i forgot to add that the trucks there have no rust and are considerably cheaper than most places. so its nothing to save a couple grand and get what you want for a 200 dollar ticket and 100 bucks in fuel..

my .02

new tires and nice rims on both. The 5sp is an extended cab. The auto is a Crew Cab. The crew cab suites me better. No rust on either one. I would't want to buy a truck I could't drive first. I am really picky and my standards are higher than most. I have never had luck getting a vehicle from far away.

k my .02 is do as 1997F-350 said i looked around went threw two ole 6.9 diesels before i got my 1997 Ford F250HD ext cab, ex oilfield truck, one owner, 5spd with 200k miles on it and yes it had dents and dings in it but i only paid 4820 with my ole 85 running on 7 instead of 8 for 1850. so as for rust, none whats ever, have replaced starter, tires, clutch, and now valve cover gasket, wiring harness underneath one, glowplugs, and ok mine aint running at the moment but it still will to a point though. as far as payin 12k for one i might with 130k miles or less but with 200k no i wouldnt. i did out right price on mine on kbb and in excellent condition it would be close to 13k dollars with 247k miles on it, so i think 12k is just alittle over priced if ur looking for a 94-97 come to texas theres plenty around here. i know theres one in the paper thats a 95 ext cab f250 4wd 5 spd for 4850 dont know miles or what the truck looks like but as far as how it sounds to me sounds like a good deal though, but u wont find any rust on our trucks in texas unless u live by the coast though lol. thanks Lance
