I know this is a driveline question. I wanted to ask the 385 guys this question. 1978 F100, 460 (400-500 hp??), 9" w/locker and 3.50 gears. C6 now but needs rebuilding. Would like to convert to 4spd auto. Is an AOD strong enough? How difficult is it to go with the EAOD? The 460 should will be turning around 6k rpm. This a street/strip shortbed as well as a daily driver. Any other trans ideas will be accepted as long as it is an automatic. I was told the gear vendors was around $2500, cant afford that much.
Note some GM trans will work also. (who cares, it's modified anyway...)
Now, if you're going to the scrappy and pulling one out of a wreck and you're not going to go through it or mod it, stay with the C6, as a stock AOD probably won't take much 460.
Try doing a search for Lentech they make an AOD that will take over 1000HP. They can build it for any need you have. Its not cheep, but probbly cheeper than a gear vendor. Also they have a removable bell housing and have a bell houseing for a 429-460.
