I have an 04 6.0 with only 22500 miles on it. I had the turbo cleaned at the beginning of this year at about 19000 miles along with the EGR being relpaced. My question is how many times will Ford clean the turbo before they replace it?
Thanks for the reply, i guess this will continue to happen as i don't drive the truck that much. Any info on the newer turbos? Are they any better at not rusting that my original?
yea, that's what i do now but it still doesn't help. i do drive it hard when i do drive it and it still seems to happen. i guess only time will tell. thanks again for your reply
Do you use a fuel additive? Typically the recommendations to prevent the turbo and EGR sticking are:
- use quality fuel
- use OEM filters
- avoid excessive idling
- avoid short trips
- occasionally run it hard, under a load
- use a quality fuel additive (ford's, stanadyne, etc - none containing alcohol)
- use synthetic oil
- reroute the ccv
Not all of these address rust, but the turbo will stick for other reasons as well.

It's a yes to all of your questions except for the occasional short trip and i have not done the ccv yet. I use Stanadyne on every tank. It's been less than 2k miles since it was cleaned last time. It's just hard to believe it's that bad again.
I just gotta clean the soot out of the tail pipe before the dealer sees it tomorrow. I was questioned about how much there was last time and of course the programmer question followed that.
Do you have gauges? If so, have you ever seen the fuel pressure below 45 psig? Do you have any fuel system upgrades to go along w/ the tuner (FASS, return regulated system, bigger injectors, etc)?
No fuel pressure gauge only boost, pyro and trans. And i have not run the tuner for months, only ran it about a week after i got it back and had problems with tunes after the truck was flashed and I'm waiting for new tunes.
Last time the turbo would produce more boost when traveling at a steady speed. Now i loose boost and power when traveling at a constant speed usually around 35 - 40 mph.
ok so now the truck has been at the dealer since monday and it's being driven daily by a guy i know who is the service manager, but hecan't seem to get the turbo to act up.
So i guess my question now is, since the turbo was last cleaned in Oct. and now only 3k miles later it's sticking again...will a non-VGT turbo solve my issue? I'd probably want to wait until the truck is out of warranty.
Its a lack of use since I havent driven it 1000 miles since February. Usually I get the P0200 code and it seems like the IC hose has popped off until it warms up and I exercise the turbo. I no longer have a tuner, and havent done the CCV re-route either but I do all the other stuff except synthetic oil, The only cure is to drive it and exercise that turbo. I am sure a non VGT turbo will solve some issues but it will cost some $$ too. Plus I am not sure what other mods come with that but I am sure someone who knows will help with that.
My truck had to go in for an EGR valve and The Turbo replacement. After I got ir back It had a longer turbo boost time and seemed weaker. They flashed the computer twice.
I read some where that these flashes lowered the fuel pressure and opened the EGR valve at idle.
Has anyone else had this problem?
The dealer was nice enough to call today and tell me to pick up my truck. The bill is right around $ 170.00 including $ 40.00 in fuel and they can't find anything wrong. So i asked if i could get a job that would pay me $ 130.00 to drive a couple of miles a day. Service writer didn't like my comment. So i'll be heading there tomorrow to take a tech for a ride that i'm sure will last 5 minutes before i can make the turbo act up. oh what fun.
