410 FE
I was getting some input from my machinist the other day and he said he had a line on a Mercury 410 crank. He said it would slip right in place of the 390 crank, use the same rods but probably would need new pistons to keep the compression ratio realistic. Has anyone ever done this? Any suggestions?
Thanks, Rich

Rich, There is no such thing as a 410 crank, just like there is not a 360 crank, but both engines use the 390 block. The 410 was a Mercury engine only used for a couple of years. It is a 390 block with a 428 crank. Makes one heck of a truck engine. Used with stock truck heads and a well tuned 2 barrel carb. it will pull a house and could get 12-13 mpg. How much is he asking for the crank. I might be interested in it, if you aren't.

My machinist wasn't absolutely sure about the price. I need to call him tomorrow to find out. He was thinking in the $200 - 250 range with flywheel.
I am getting excited about this. I have heard a ton of good about this. Just my luck thoughm he has probably already found a buyer.

I think Flatlander or one other that sell used FE parts is asking $475 for used standard, $425 for a 10/10 used crank as is you grind.
Standard reconditioned rods with 3/8" ARP bolts will be plenty strong unless 55-6,000 is your operating range. The best way for a smooth motor is have it internally balanced, that way if you change flywheels, flexplates or convert auto to manual you won't create vibration problems. 410's were a optional motor only in Mercury's back in 66-67, problem is it had 10.5:1 compression. With todays bad gas detonation will be a problem and to retard will kill power. As for fuel mileage I can pull 14.1 to 14.3 with a 414, auto, 3.54 gears in a 68 CS. It has 427 heads to lower the compression.
