i have a 96/97 stroke had it bout 4-5 yrs and since day one its run rich bout onth in to it had injectors clean and tested figured would clean up but got back and still rich year later needed all 8 rebiult (bad idea went out couple months done the road) still rich so rich you can see the exhast in the right angle even when driveing if your behind me when cruising still rich. the only thing added is a power programer 3. any ideas why its like this i have a 4.10 gear and only do 15-16 at 55 ive been told by people with similair truck they get 18+. thanks
Your programmer could be the cause. Mileage depends on the truck really. If it's bone stock you are getting restriction from the stock intake and downpipe, limiting your MPG's. It also depends on your driving style.
The programmers really don't work that well on these trucks. A chip is the best option, with custom tunes from PHP, TW, DP Tuner, or Gearhead.
When my truck was still a dually with 4.10's I was getting average 15-16 mpg with only a 6637 intake installed. I swapped to Single wheel with 3.55's and it went to about 16-17 average. With chip, intake, exhaust, and bigger injectors I can still get about 17-19 mpg mixed driving and over 20 on the highway.
what kind of programmer do you have??? some of the generic off the shelf programmers can be very hard on our injectors, edge for one, but blowing black smoke is not nearly the issue that is can be on a gasser. it is just part of the deal, diesel trucks smoke, now if it is blowing blue or white smoke then you need to take a look at the old girl, but more than likely your programmer caused your injector failure, as mentioned before you would be better served looking for a tuner that is designed for your truck. try this, pull the programmer off your truck, drive it around and see how it does, if it smokes significantly less then your issue is obvious, but if it is still belching a lot of smoke then you may want to revisit the issue, but let's start with the programmer and see what happens
ok well the way i normaly drive i barely touch 2000rpms while taking off and cruising, the programer is the power programer 3 its old and the guy i bought it from put it on and said it made a big diiference i havent tried it off yet. now if i lay down into her like in traffic oh yall she smokes a little wich is cool iwas just consernd about tat idle she smokes lightly enough to stay in your cloths for a bit if you walk by the pipe. its all straight fornt from the turbo back. i will try with out the programer monday but my seliniod strarted to just click today and no turn over once it starts i will try that. question though how can a generic programer be hard on the injectors?
im not new to tinkering with my truck but never realy had to do major work but what is the IPR or EOT. sorry also is there a way i can check my fuel presure bylow i asumme you mean the hpop not the manuel because changed it bout 6 months ago

IPR & EOT need to be checked by a PSD capable scanner . May be a member near you that can scan it for you
ok the eot is the engine oil temp right? used to be able to scan my truck for free and i scan it when i got fo the hell of it and the only code showed the eot in the hpop resivor and i changed it bout 4 yrs ago but before i did and after there was no difference in runnig or starting. but what is the ipr i read on here its on the left head by lifting lug?
A programmer changes everything that the computer does to the engine.
If it makes the wrong changes it will tear the engine, injectors, or anything for that matter apart.
I second pulling the programmer & I would add the $35 computer reflash from Ford, once you get the starting issue solved.
When diagnosing a computerized system you need to be sure that the brains are functioning properly.
Some programmers and chips will cause some smoke at idle, IMO those types are not the best on your truck.
Also make sure the EBPV isn't stuck closed that could cause smoke as well as other things.
