I've recently gotten a chirping noise coming from my distributor. When I lightly push on the cap, the noise stops. The engine also seems to bog out intermitantly, usually at higher speeds & under load. I haven't yet taken the cap off to check for cracks/bad rotor. Could it be something worse, ie problem with shaft. Is there a bearing in there, which would probably be easier to change the whole distributor shaft.
Pushing dow on the cap wouldn't press anything inside. But your rotor or cap might be wore enough that when you press on it it's making better contact.
I have now changed the cap & rotor, and the noise(chirping) & misses are still there. I did notice on the old cap, where the #2 lead snaps on is corroded with a greenish oxidation. I will pull the plug & change the lead. This could explain the missing. Further consultation with Lorco guy, leads me to believe that the bearing in the distributor is shot.
It might not be the only thing on this van that is going to be shot!!! Always something.
pull SPOUT and check base timing for steady 10d BTDC, no changes with rpm change....fluctuating base timing indicates major wear in distributor/cam/timing chain system....
Scar! It is difficult to understand what a hell is going on inside distributor, till you take it apart. Ones this noise coused unplaned stop on ampty hightway 40 miles from any town ore village. when I tried to open cap I sow rotor, rotated freely on shaft. I put pices of paper under the rotor to prevent its freely rotation to drive home...
I've odered it now. Till I have no rotor I dont drive too far from my home
