Bad distributor?

i got an 85 f150 with the 300 carburated, and today while i was driven at about 45mph, i felt it cut out then it lost power and after a few more minutes it just died. it would not start back up. checked crank and cam and both are turning over when i turn the key over. it is getting gas to the carb. i took distributor cap off and when i turn the key over the rotor button would turn a little and hesitate then turn slow then fast then slow again. also, i can turn the rotor by hand, should you be able to? is it possibly just the distributor gear on the distributor shaft? could a bad distributor also cause it to idle rough?

Sounds like the roll pin on the dist gear is sheared, could be caused by the oil punp locking up or the distributor itself

Do you have to buy a whole new distributor or can you just replace the roll pin and gear?

FIrst pull the distributor and see what you've got going on. I have seen people just replace the roll pin and drive it but I dont know if it lasted or not. I've never done an oil pump in a 300 but I imagine 2wd would be a lot easier than 4x4

Napa does sell the gear and roll pin. The roll pin is the hollow split kind and does not look very strong. The gear is suppose to be a press fit which means you need to disassemble the distributor to keep from damaging it while pressing it on. I would strongly recommend getting a new/ reman dist at napa. I am using a Duraspark 2 dist with a vacuum advance on my truck. The price for the EEC IV might be higher, not sure. Now that I think about it you might not have to disassemble the EEC IV Dist to press on the gear as there are no moving parts inside it, like advance springs.

My engine was hot when I tried to stick my finger down inside the gear to pull it out, it would have worked if I had let it cool down first, then I wouldn’t have yelled and jump, thus dropping the gear.

Distributor Gear & Pin Kit at Napa
Item#: BK 6551267
Price: $29.99
tax and shipping not included
Must Drill Pilot Hole to Match OE Shaft ... read this part twice!!!!!!!! The gear is not drilled!!!!!!

Looks like the EEC IV dist is about $100 at napa.
Good luck
Jim
