sorry I should have added, that if you dont have both then dont guess at it.

if you have both red and gray then maybe someone had allready changed it to the 134a.

the one next to the battery in the photo is the high side.

see the hose running from compressor and runs along the firewall near the windshield? that is the low side, and the line going to condenser from compressor is high side.

I'm sure!

the low side line is the one that will get cold.
high side line gets hot because its under high pressure.

I think its time to take it to the shop, I hooked the r-134 and gauge to the low side and after about 20 seconds of letting in r-134 the gauge read 75 psi. The system was empty before and the motor was running with A/C set to max. I dont know enough about A/c to troubleshoot this. Bad gauge?

actually, the compressor is not running yet , so is it normal for the pressure to be high until the compressor kicks in?

Exactly right, when the compressor shuts of the system will equalize and the pressure on both sides will be about the same. I think 100ish, depends on the temp outside.. When the compressor kicks on it will suck on the low side, dropping the pressure, and kick the high side way up.
If it was empty, it might not come on til you get the second can in. Listen for the compressor to start kicking on. When it stops shutting back off, you know you are close.
From empty, it will probably start then stop immediately, every 30 to 60 seconds, and run longer and longer as you fill it.
If you turn the can upside down it will fill much faster. Leave it right side up when you get close to the right pressure so you can control it better though.

Thanks I'll give it another shot, it just made me nervous that the pressure was so high, I didnt want anything to blow up. It doesnt tell you all this in the kit! Thanks again.

I dont mean to beat this simple procedure to death but I have just one more question. I just hooked up held a can of r-134 upside down for a solid thirty minutes while shaking and it feels like maybe a 1/4 can went in at the most (and thats being generous), this is with motor running and A/C set to max. Is it supposed to take this long? I am probably wrong but the system was previously empty and the guage reads 100 psi at the low side and I think that there is not enough pressure in the can to push the refrig. into the system. Could this be the case?...and is there a way to remedy this? Thanks.

It should only take about 10 minutes to empty the can. The compressor still hasn't kicked on. Normally it would suck it right out for you. It should be kicking on and off by now.
Make sure the connector is plugged in, and the fuses and relays. It will also run in defrost position. You should have a relay, and poss a fusable link for the ac clutch in the engine relay box. There will also be a fuse on the inside panel I think.

Yeah the compressor has not kicked on yet. There is a fuse in the inside panel, it is good. The connector is plugged in and in good condition. The fusable link looks okay, I will have to find the relay and look at that too. What if I turn the compressor on manually, will this help draw the refrig. out? Thanks -Ryan

Thanks for the help.

Hey thanks for all the help I have cold A/C. To jump start the compressor when the system was empty I hooked the 134 up and manually turned on the compressor for about thirty seconds and this got the whole process flowing. I dont know if that is bad for anything but it worked, the a/c is cold, the pressure is right, and i'm stoked. I guess I'll see how long it lasts. I could not see any leaks and I replaced the orings but theres probably a leak somewhere, time will tell. Thanks again.

what should the psi be on the low side when adding 134a?
