i got a 2000 ford f-150 4.6L Triton V8 if i was to take that engine out and drop in a 5.6L engine from a lightning what electronic work would i have to do? one of my friends says i would have to get a new computer and program that.
If you wanna put in the 5.4 from the lightning, I don't see why it wouldn't drop right in with minimal custom work. Find a 100% turnkey lightning motor with ECU and everything already hooked up and ready to go, take the old one out, do what you want with it, and put the new one in. If you haven't done it before, don't attempt it yourself. A friend with alot of experience may be able to help, but the best way to do it is take it to a reputable shop. But the 5.4 sits on the same mounts as the 4.6, same tranny, blah blah blah. Shouldn't be that difficult.
If it's an automatic, it will handle all three. All f-150's share either the 4R70 or the 4R100 auto tranny. Ford never put the 5 speed in the 5.4. It's made by mazda, and apparently not too tough. Just about anything on the 4.6 and 5.4 are interchangeable (same block), but the 4.2 is a different motor. Not sure about motor mounts. If your 4.2 is an auto, then yes it will hook up to any 4.6/5.4 block
In order to make the swap right you'd need the entire running gear off the Lightning, not just the engine and it's electronics.
The Lightning only came with the 4R100 and the 9.75" rear - the factory 4R70W and the factory 8.8" simply aren't compatible with the potential HP and torque from a supercharged 5.4.
