OK Iv posted on here a few times about a bad vibration (or hopping) that i have in the rear of my truck while driving around 40mph. when i first took it into the dealer, right after i bought it, they told me it was the "aggressive tread" of my tires. well new tires were in the plans anyway so. . . it was still there. then they say it must be the wheel balance. now after a two month break from the dealer i took it back and this time actually drove with a tech. now hes saying that it is possible the torque converter chattering. does this sound like something that might actually be the problem? I just dont want the dealer to be giving me the run around. iv checked all the obvious stuff (ujoints, carrier, tire balance)
IS it just between 40-45mph? If so, do a search. there are many of us here that have this quirk between 40-45mph. I, like others, have had the tranny redone and still get this. Its not noticeable under hard acceleration, but there under normal- and when slowing down. As far as I have been told it is the tc causing it.
Had almost duplicate situation on my 99a....replaced TC and spent $$ and was not fixed. Turned out to be 2 completely plugged non working injectors. Replaced those two and TA DA...problem solved.
I notice this vibration fairly frequently at those speeds and hoped it was tires but from past experience just driving vehicles for 30 some years suspected something more. The TC seemed to be the culprit until I tested by manually disengaging it while the vibe was happening and it failed to stop it. That was a relief and leads me back to carrier bearing or u-joints or wheel balance. Sometimes a vibration can be felt only when tires and wheels are under load and not when off vehicle mounted on a balancer. The balancer that some garages have can simulate this load and balance accordingly. Just my musings.
Thanks! Yeah the only time it does it is right under 40 (38-39) as soon as it hits 40 gone. and like empiretc said you cant feel it under acceleration, but coasting and decel. the truck still has the ext warenty so i shouldnt have to spend any more then the 100 deductable. im just glad that somebody from the dealer is now agreeing with me that i do have a problem. im dropping it off this afternoon, once i find out more ill let you know.
Thanks again
please do. I have done all the u-joints, carrier bearing, and had the wheels balanced and none of that fixed the problem.. it would be nice to hear what the stealership says.
right around 39-40-41mph i have a bad driveline vibration too. it did it when it was stock, and it's not because of the lift, i have that shimmed down good. it doesnt matter the engine speed, as long as the driveline is spinning the speed it needs to for 40ish rpm, it will bounce and vibrate the whole truck. you can watch the passenger seat-back vibrate about a half inch each way, it's embarassing to experience with someone in the truck. so, i slow down some or speed up some. if anyone has a cure for this, please post.
i am thinking my driveshaft MIGHT be a hair out of line and at that speed of revolution, it fluctuates, just like drone on an exhaust system.
No I havnt heard from them yet. They should be getting hold of me tomarrow (atleast thats what im hoping, because im getting tired of driving the piece of crap taures they gave me for a loaner).
Anyways . . . Strokin that sounds almost exactly like what i have been experiencing, and i know what you mean by embarassing, i just wonder what my truck look likes from behind when its bouncing around like it does.
Again Ill let you guys know as soon as i find something out.
My 99 F350 Quad cab does have a bad shake as well and does the same as mentioned above. I have a completely rebuilt trans/Billet mutidisc converter and new tires that have been balanced several times and still it shakes as it always has before the trans went bang! It drives me crazy too! I have been told that it is the drive shaft, as it seems to be more predominent from the rear? I have had my tires balanced several times now and can't understand why it goes away with speed if my shaft is out?
Tailspin, sounds very similar, I just hope I have better luck than you with getting it to go away. Unfortunitly however, i will not know since the dealership still will not tell me anything and probably wont for at least another day, maybe two. (Man I hate driving a taures, I feel like a little girl)
guys, i am convinced this problem we all have is in the drive shaft. I think I need to have mine balanced. I have heard you can remove it and put some atf in it and it will take care of the balance.
The reason I say this is today I carried a 4x8 piece of 1/2" steel. It must weigh about 400 pounds or so. But with that thing in the back of my truck, it didnt jiggle or vibrate at all between 40-45.
I have never put a load on my truck, but do you all pulling a trailer still get that vibration?
I still get vibrations with a load, just not as noticable. I drove my buddies duramax to get my new altenator from the part store and they are sickly smoothe in comparrison to what im dealing with. My truck feels like a D-9 on pavement. I am still not convinced of it being the drive shaft as it does smoothe out at around 50. If the shaft is out of balance it should get worse with speed, however it does have the typical driveshaft symptoms. The vibration feels as though it comes right up through your seat. I had almost excepted it as i am now used to it but i do find i speed lots to stay over 50 and avoid the shakes!
