It wont get worse. It has been the same on my truck since the day I got it. Keep pushing wolfe. Remember, the bearing that squeals the loudest gets the grease.
Wolfe, thanks for all the running your doing. Do you think it would be worth it to bring your driveshaft to a shop that can simulate the 40+mph shimmy and balance to that? I am thinking about doing this when I take it off to do the slip yoke greasin. As strokin it said there does seem to be a harmonic phenom going on with mine too that at just the right spin my shaft starts dancing from 40-43 mph. I just hope that if they balance it where this shake occurs it doesn`t bring it to another rpm. empiretc`s carrier bearing theory sounds plausable too yet someone? tried with no result. Mine was still there with a full 6 ton trailer and empty. Interesting about the injectors causing the shakes. I will keep watch on this thread though but don`t have time yet to work on my rig.
There's a bulletin out about having to change the TC on '99 7.3 TD. I had to have mine changed in Hays, KS on a trip back from Wyoming; about $1200. Had it been done during the first 2 - 3 years, it would have been covered under recall. I'm not sure where I put the bulletin, but if anyone's interested, let me know and I'll dig it out.
Ok guys and gals. I traded my Ranger for my early 99 with my brother-in-law. He's hard of hearing so it's no surprise to me he never heard or felt the rumble I was having just like everyone else here. I went and had the tires rebalanced and rotated (only 6k on them) and did not make a difference either. Evryone was telling me that it was the tires/wheels. There was no difference after the rotation, so in my relative shallow reasoning, I ruled out the tires/wheels. I thought, ok it's got to be the driveline. I'm thinking the carrier bearing. I have a very reputable driveline company locally that I've had great work from in the past. To my great big surprise it turned out to be a dry and non-sliding spline on the drive shaft. Those that notice a difference when loaded down is because your forcing the spline to slide in a little and that changes the dynamics of the driveshaft. I have almost 100k on my truck so I had the universal joints, carrier bearing, and the spline replaced and a new one welded on that has a grease fitting all for $300. Didn't think that was too bad. After taking it for a ride and being skepticle, it surprised me on how so smooth it was and absolutely quite throughout the whole speed range. He told me that I probably could have dropped the shaft, pulled the yoke/universal off the spline, cleaned and greased it and the trouble would have been gone. You all might look at that as your cause if your not getting any relief with any other fixes. I can't tell you how smooth it is now. I can understand how my brother-in-law didn't hear it, but crap, it would vibrate so bad, I can't believe he couldn't notice it. Good luck to all. Hope this helps someone.
Thanks Marty that is encouraging, so I`ll try the slip-spline grease fix first cause I also get the driveline clunk on startup. My 99 converter was changed out by the previous owner so I`m good there.
yes i do get the vibration Empiretc, and i think marty has a very logical way to fix it. i will be trying it as soon as i get time. thanks RMR i left you some Rep. points.
Rocky that makes alot of sense. Alot more then "tires not being balanced correctly". I finally got ford talked into the deal that ill pay for the balancing if it works and that if it doest they're out $200 and still need to fix my truck. I just have to find time to take it down there sometime this next week.
I sure hope it helps you guys out. All I know is it fixed mine right up and I would consider my vibration and rumble sound as moderate to severe. I was positive it was going to turn out to be my carrier bearing. So when I was told it was a dry spline, I was very skeptical, but it worked.
