i have been getting this steady sqweel noise while driving for a couple of months now but its bothering me.
i'm thinking its the bearings but it hasn't gotten louder during the time.
maybe breaks but it does it in motion and its the same pitch all the to a complete stop.
i put it on a jack and spun the wheels, nothing. my buddy thinks i'm crazy but i'm not !
in my experience as a machine mechanic, when bearings are on the way out they start to growl or grind eventually leading to a complete seize.
i don't want to take it to ford just yet, i just bought a house and previous to that i needed my valve body rebuilt in my tranny $800 later.
any suggestions? i just seen a thread about bearings but it wasn't much help to me.
thanks!!!
Whoa...if they've never been serviced they're definetly due!
What the, whoops...................hang on Zack, hold your eager to rear and post something horses....................... how can you instantly jump to this conclusion given that he has not told us what year he is driving as well as if it's 4x4???????? Some years use sealed bearings. You don't service sealed bearings.
thanks guys.
i have a 2000 and it is a 4x4.
i do believe they are sealed.
a mechanic i know said to replace them but i'd rather not if i don't have to.
please let me know if the above makes sense as i don't really think they are bad.
i don't know what else it could be.
i've heard that if when making a turn the sound goes away its a good indication of bearings, but it does not.
i would just like some insight on wheel bearings and the signs of trouble.
please!
thanks!
Well, based on your vehicle description, you do in fact have sealed bearings. What I would do is put it on a jack and try to wobble the tire at the 12 and 6 o'clock position as well as the 3 and 9 o'clock position to check for bearing slop. I would also, and if the above does not pan out, remove the wheels and see if the wear indicators on the brake pad are making contact with the rotor.
**RangerPilot/Zack, I'm still anxious to hear how a guy is supposed to service these sealed bearings that are "definately due" for service. It's not in the owners manual given that they are sealed bearings. Please explain to all of us the "service" process for these sealed wheel bearings. Thanks.
i appreciate your help on this topic cowboy.
pilot is just trying to help. it was just a mental mistake probably.
i did check on the wear indicators even though i did the breaks about 6mo. ago.
i also checked for bearing slop just like you mentioned with my mechanic friend which is why he thought i was nuts.
anything else you can suggest please.
thanks!
Some aftermarket brake pad materials are not compatible with the rotor and they squeak, but for all that I've seen the end result is almost always noise when the brakes are applied. BUT, there is a slight amount of contact, allbeit very little, when braking. Can you somehow confirm or disconfirm this situation?
*I do want to hear what RangerPilot is thinking regarding the "service"; is he injecting lube through the side seal on these sealed bearings?
you know what, now that i think about it, i unfortunately used cheeper rotors when i did my brakes. i also had a bad situation happen. somehow the brake caliper bolt backed itself out and it slipped out of position causing it to sort of pinch the rotor which then cocked it and literally sliced my rim like a can of beans. it was all fixed but wonder if my noise isn't stemming from this past situation.
i guess nothing else could be a factor besides brakes or bearings?
the above mentioned happened about a year ago so that means i actually did the brakes over a year ago and the noise started ohhh, 4mo. ago?.
