Question Fitting '53 Window Cranks

OK, am I the only one who is/has had problems fitting my window crank handles onto the splined shaft?
I used a pair of '56 crank handles but they kept slipping and wore the internal teeth down so I went and got a pair of slant cab handles but I can't seem to get them to sit properly. They go on but not far enough so I can get the retaining ring to go in the slot on the splined shaft.
Any advice on this?
As usual, Thanks Guys

GW

Fitting '53 Window Cranks

53 MERC, I also have a 53 and was wondering if there was a problem with these door/window handles. On my truck the guy that had it before me found a way to correct this.
Before I get into it, I bought a new set as the ones on it currently are incorrect, found this out after the fact. Anyway on my truck now as I have padded door panels, and the originals won't go on with the escuteons, there are G.M. handles and cranks.
They appear to be off of a 60s G.M. they fit the spline great, and are drilled in the center, tapped and have a flat head machine screw going through the handles into the crank mechanism itself.
Better still they look, and work great. Now I myself didn't do this piece of artistic work, so I can only tell you what I have on mine. I don't know if this will be of any value to you but, maybe it would work for you as well. One other small detail I forgot to mention is that the ends of the pivots where the spline is, has been cut off flat just before the spline.
Reson being is that the G.M. window and door handles are a little more shallow

Thanks 5Star.
BTW, where about in Canada are you?
Back to the WIndow Crank Handles...
I'd really prefer to keep the truck FoMoCo as much as possible [I do have the bench seat from a '94 Ch*vy Ch*yenne, oh well] so before I go the GM route I'd like to figure out how to make these work properly.
The Carpentre '53-'55 handles are plenty deep enough, they just seem too narrow to fit deeply enough over the splined shaft to seat teh locking mechanism over the machine slot on the shaft properly.
{Does that make sense visually?}

35 miles east of you along 401.

Is or are your door panels padded, and I presume you are useing the escuteons? If so mayme check for the depth by takeing a piece of mechanics wire or other form of measureing system, and see if in fact the door handles are deep enough.
At the end of the shaft as you know they are roundes off, before the spline. you just may have to drill a little to get the handle on far enough.
Again before you go that far just check to see if the wire measure is the same as the depth in the handle. I hope I am not confuseing you on my terminolgy here.
Get back to me if you need me to alter my explanation a little more clearly, I even think I am starting to confuse myself.

I do have the escuteons, but I haven't put them in while doing this "trial Fitting", so that's not what is gettng in the way.
I'm going to my Manual to see if they share some insight there!

53 Merc.

Those escuteons are going to add to the problem that you already have, as they, I believe stick out a little further.

I have used a rubber mallet to secure the window cranks on to the regulator.

PS: by the way, the door handles should be mounted at a 45 degree angle, like the big hand of a clock pointing between the 10 and 11. This way you can easily crank your window up and down with out banging your knuckles on the door handle. This is the way they were put on in the factory.
