Mine is labeled as a V as well. It is original. I have read in the past that it is not really a V...but don't recall why or how they got away with labeling it as one.
Just what determines the "class" of a hitch? I know someone is going to say the weight it can carry but who sets this standard? Is there any LEGAL definition? People get so wrapped up in manufactures recommended ratings but these don't have any relationship to the law in most cases. Is there any LAW against going over that rating? Has anyone ever gotten a ticket for doing so?
A smaller label lists the max hitch capacity as 12,500 pounds with weight distribution which technically makes it a Class V hitch.
According to the UHaul website, V-5 is simply a minimum testing/rating system of trailer hitches established by the Trailer Hitch Manufacturers Association.
This is proving to be a little more interesting than I thought. If you all (with the class V hitches) would post pics either in your gallery or via link of your hitches; we could probably sort this out a little better.
Ok Don't know if this helps But I have an 06 F350 PSD SRW. I posted pics of my factory hitch in my gallery. One with a ruler to get dimension size and one of the label.
Mine's a Class 5 but's it's an aftermarket Reese Titan with a 2 1/2" receiver that's rated 17k pounds, weight distributing. In the barn I've got my '99 factory hitch that was rated 10k and my '03 hitch that was rated 12.5k and they're exactly the same.

I thought the stock receiever is 2 in? How did that work out? I looked at the Reese titan and couldn't see an application for the Excursion??
Nobody makes a replacement hitch for the Excursion. The reason is that the hitch on our X's are considered a "blocker beam" and part of the safety system. Nobody wants to take the liability of replacing a safety component. If I remember correctly, the hicth is rivited on, not bolted...
