The 400 has an odd bolt pattern nothing but a tranny off a 400 will fit. Your choices are the FMX and the C6 thats it. The bolt pattern is close to the small block but the top holes are farther apart on the 400. I'd look for a C6 out of a mid 70s LTD or wagon. Good luck, Rich.
Welcome to the forum! This is the right place for help with your 63 - but you might find more advice about the 400 in the 70s section. A lot of us float around between the different forums, and you will find a rich source of help and info here.
Now, about that 400. The 400M is the same block as a 351M, so you can go from there. Any tranny with the correct bolt pattern will fit in, but you may have some of the following issues to deal with:
1. Shift linkage.
2. Carb-kickdown linkage
3. Tranny crossmember location
4. Driveshaft length
Of course, if you rebuild or replace your FMX you won't have anything new to worry about.
If you want to change, I recommend you look for a C-6, arguably the best automatic made by Ford. Big, strong, and powerful. Keep in mind that a C-6 tranny for a 400, for example, is the same as a C-6 tranny for an FE engine (352,360,390), but they won't interchange between engines because the bolt-up patterns are the same.
None of there are insurmountable, they will take some time and money though. Depending how much you want to put in it, you can have a very nice drive train!
the 400 DOES NOT have an odd pattern for the bellhousing. it is the standard pattern for a 351 M 400 429 and 460. the FMX is a good trans but they are finicky and i have noticed that any service beyond changing the oil and filter is soon followed by failure. any C4 or C6 from a 68-80+ car or truck with one of these engines will bolt in. i did not notice if you had a 2 or 4 wheel drive but my assumption is you have a long trans with a slip yoke in which case most trans out there will bolt in. the questions are going to be what shift linkage do you have? and what is the overall length? if your trans came from say a 75 cougar then look for the same car style (cougar tbird elite continental MK IV/V (?)) and then it would have the same arm setup for linkage (the arms are specific for the trans but ford made the trans interchangeable by making the linkage end up in the same spot with the same throw). also remember that you will need a torque convertor for a 351M or 400 so if you get a C6 from a 460 you will need a different convertor. also look at your trans mount, ford used a couple of different setups so try and get one that is the same as what you have. ford was very nice about auto trans in that there are only a few different lengths and almost all versions are the same (a 76 ford torino C4, C6, or FMX will all be the same length same mount and same linkage but may have a different output spline count so get the yoke while you are at it). hope this helps, hawkrod
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jul-02 AT 12:41 PM (EST)]My earlier post has a typographical error: the bolt patterns of the 351M/400M and the FE Series (352-360-390) are NOT the same.
Hope this didn't cause any confusion!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Jul-02 AT 11:07 PM (EST)]i have to correct an earlier post about torque convertors, they are meant to match the tranny NOT the engine so as long as you have a C6 convertor with a c6 you'll be fine.
in my demo cars i have a c4 from a 250 I6 behind a 302..the convertor fits fine.
and the YOKE size between C4 and C6 is Different so maybe FMX is too.
beware of that.
my guess if its the same as something it'd likely be the c6
i have to correct the last post about correcting posts about torque convertors. the 351M and 400 use a torque convertor that is unique to those engines and although a C6 from a 429 or 460 will bolt on the torque convertor is very different and will not interchange. this is unusual for ford as a 240/300 six is the same as a 289 302 351W or 351C and all of the FE and Y blocks will interchange. but the end of the crank is different on a 351M or 400 and so the flexplate and torque convertor was made specifically to fit the small block type crank to the 385 series trans. hawkrod (been there and done that, my 77 F250 4X4 came with a 400 and now has a 460 but had to buy a new torque convertor!)
Saw your post on forum--I'm also inproccess of installing a 400 into my F-100 63--replaceing the 223. What sort of set up did you use for motor mounts and pads. I ordered from J.C. Whitney, a engine swap kit[cradle with motor mounts and mount pads] thats supposed to allow me to make the swap: but that kit turned out worthless for my project. Any help would be appericiated. Thanks!
