IP Question

Hey all,

Does an injector pump eventually just fail, or is it a more gradual thing with symptoms to watch-out for? I'm not having any problems, but am heading out on a "longer" trip and don't want to get stuck. Is there anything I should watch for?.....93 E350 IDI 260,000km.

Jer

I put almost 300,000 on my original IP.
It was getting tired, but it still ran rather well.

Then there are the IP's that die at 100,000 or less.

use a good additive for the fuel ... diesel kleen, power service or lubricity always worked for me.
the low sulfur content of the fuel causes the internals to wear out quicker than when the engines were first designed.

there should be no sudden failure of the pump unless you get a real bad dose of water in the fuel. I said the word fuel not gas. pay attention to the pumps you use and make sure they indicate FUEL. you never know what you are going to find out there.

Here at BD Power our sister company is Valley Fuel Injection that has been building pumps and injectors for the P/S for years now, I highly recommend the Stanadyne fuel additive, very good product!!!!

Most all IPs, about 99.7%, fail gradually. The internals wear and the pressure drops and the timing gets off. Symptoms can be loss of power over time, rough running, hard starting, erratic idle, etc.

Very few of them ever have catastrophic failure. So if your van is runing good now, I would not worry about taking it on a long trip.

As bilder12 stated, the life blood of an IP is LUBRICATION. Using a fuel additive in every tank will extend the life of your IP.

There is always the risk of developing a fuel leak that can't be repaired.

Ford changed my Dad's IP under warranty just before the truck warranty ran out because of a minor drip that started to develop on the IP.

I got 215,000 km on my 93 and still going very strong. Keep up with the additives for lubrication. With the new ULSD fuels there is a high risk that an older pump could suddenly die due to poor lubrication. Maybe install a 2 micron Racor filter in place of the factory 10 micron filter to extend you IP life further.

Seb....
