I have a 79 F250 400 motor with less than 500 miles. After driving in hot conditions and or engine gets hot I have difficulty restarting. Once leaving for 30-1 hour it will start. Truck seems to be otherwise running correctly and timing is good.
Truck starts great when cold only challenging during summer or after running for a while. Engine equipped with standard fuel pump but does have edelbrock carb and an in line fuel filter. Several friends have suggested its vapor locked.
Fuel line and filter is in close proximity to block and manifold should I relocate or maybe try and insulate filter and line? suggestions please
Both of my '79's are hard to start when hot. One of mine I think may actually be too rich - if I hold the pedal all the way to the floor it starts right up. I also pulled my fuel line away from the block as much as I could without kinking anything - was a tight fit. You might try holding the pedal to the floor when it does that to see if it will start. Don't let it rev up or anything, just hold the pedal down until it just starts then immediately let off. If that doesn't work we can look more at the fuel line.
You mentioned that you have an Edelbrock carb, but you do not mention whether or not you have a carb spacer between the manifold and the carb?
If you do not have the carb spacer ( 4-hole or open), then you need to install one. Do not have to go crazy either with a 2", but a 1/2" will do just fine. I installed one between my manifold and carb...and have never looked back. Great little investment.
Example:
Edelbrock Carburetor Spacer, Phenolic, Black, 1 in. Thick, 4-Hole
Keep in mind that the 4-hole is for more of that torque low rpm power. The open spacer is more for the hp high rpm power.
Good luck...

I had what sounds like the same problem with mine. I changed all of the cables from the battery to the starter and grounds and that fixed the problem. It is a pretty cheap thing to do and might solve your problem.
I also say use a spacer if its a hot soak problem. Every Edelbrock carb I hav had did not like to start after 15-20 minutes sitting unless I held the pedal on the floor. Now it starts great hot or cold.
If the problem is slow cranking then check battery and all cables and if the problem persists have the starter checked it may draw to much current when its hot.
Next time you shut off the engine, remove the air cleaner and look for small wiffs of vapor rising from carburetor. If u do, then carb is leaking fuel into intake manifold.
On my '76 F250 w/ 460, I just added a 1 inch 4 hole spacer and put a heatshield wrap on the starter. We will see how this does as I have not had enough opportunities yet to see if it has corrected the problem.
could also be a tight engine with less than 500 miles on it as you say you might just have to back the timing of a couple degrees for till it breaks in and loosens up a bit
