Unless you want to convert to a manual transmission or other modifications, you're pretty much stuck with the A4LD. Someone sells an adaptor for putting GM's 700R4 transmission in, but I think it's pretty expensive.
For reference, you can get an A4LD from any 2.9 or 4.0 application and use it, though you should be aware that the 2.9L version of the A4LD used weaker internal parts that may not hold up too well to your 4.0. I'm not sure if you can use an A4LD from a 3.0 or 4 cylinder application, but you might. Again, I think the same weaker internals are present in these applications, so if you get an A4LD from a smaller engine, you'll probably want to rebuild it to 4.0 specs. Of course, at that point, you might want to just rebuild the A4LD you have. Also note that the earliest A4LD's (pre-'88) used only one solenoid in the valve body (for the TCC), so some modification would be needed to convert your '92 from 2 solenoids to 1 solenoid.
