My truck has always started without problem until yesterday. I
turned it over it tried, made a click noise kinda like a pop. So I
investigated and there was no power going through my solenoid so I
replaced it and the new one made the same noise does anyone know what is
causing this thing to pop. I have a malory ignition it came with
when I bought it I don't know if that has something to do with it or
not I also dropped the starter thinking it might be locked up but its
not. I don't really know about high performance stuff and that is
what this ignition is it looks pretty, I just don't much about how it
works.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Aug-02 AT 09:45 AM (EST)]Assuming your battery is fully charged and OK : Clean all the battery post connections and particularly the frame to starter and ground connections, solenoid connections to shiny bright metal. I run a thick ground wire directly to the starter frame in addition to the battery to frame/frame to starter connection.
I had exactly the same problem after a couple weeks of very humid weather. I knew the battery was fully charged, and I thought it might have been the solenoid, it wasn't. Don't just spray the connections down, remove them and clean with emery paper and solvent or similar. Should do the trick.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Nov-02 AT 08:42 PM (EST)]I have a 64 f100 w/ a 292. Ihave rebuilt the thing 3yrs ago,Blew the head gasket on the way to work:-( let it sit for 1 year no $ desided to fix it not knowing that water was in the block and the cylinder:-( Replaced the head gasket resurfaced the heads and the oil tried to start it and the silonoid was bad replaced it and it was dragging so I replaced the starter and it would only click. so I went through 3 starters 1 batt. and 5 siloniods that worked on my 66 f100.Keep in mind that the block had no pitting from the water sitting on top of the pistons. The truck will spin very slow but not enough to start . any ideas

You need to make sure all your connections are clean and tight first. Then try it again. If the same, it sounds like your fusible link may have popped. Power has to go to the key from the hot side of the solonoid to the key switch and back out to the solonoid to activate it. The fuse link is directly off the hot side of the sol. with a square block with a "16" on it. Usually the wire melts or breaks inside the insulation. Take a test light and with the key on, probe the wire for power. If it's bad, you'll get power only so far, and then nothing. If that's bad, remember to cut it out and replace it with the same length as what you cut or it creates resistance. You can also try to start it by putting truck in nuetral, block wheels and jump the solonoid. Put the key on when you do this and if it starts, it's not the fuse link. If it doesn't crank at all and just the popping noise again, chances are the starter crapped out or is jammed. Can you turn the motor over by hand?
