I have been hearing a strange noise before I start my truck (2001 crewcab 2wd) while the glow plugs are heating up. The noise happens most of the time and it occurs before the "wait to start" light turns off. It occurs on both cold starts and after my truck is at operating temp. It is very hard to explain what this noise sounds like, but my best description would be like a very muffled explosion that you would hear in the distance. Any thoughts???
Could be the air blend door because as soon as you turn the key, the vacuum pump starts working. Try turning your heat controls all to off before turning the key and see if they go away. Or another test is with the AC on, turn the truck off and then turn the AC control know to off. You should hear the door close. Give it a try.
Thanks for the ideas. Yes it is like a dull thud/thump. I frequently leave my AC on because it is a little warm down here in Louisiana. I'll check with both AC on and of this evening and let you know.
Ok it was not the AC but I did do what I should have done in the first place, I had a buddy turn the key and listened for where the noise was coming from. It is coming from a box directly in front of my drivers side battery. It has a few wires/hoses? coming out of it with coiled wire wrapped around them?? Not sure what it is, but it is where the noise is coming from for sure. Any ideas???
We've had that before, I just can't remember what that thing is. I don't recall it being as pronounced as you describe either. Somebody will be along shortly on this one.
i would describe it as someone banging their boot on the firewall/engine hump between the two seats. i always turn my controls to off before shutting down, so i have never heard it on my truck. however i have heard it before on the other SD's.
