Resume Advice

I was wondering if it was a bad idea to ask my boss to look over my resume. I know that sounds bad but here's my situation. I have absolutely no problems with my work or my coworkers. Due to the rising cost of living here in NY, I just want to see what my options are out of state. I am sure that my boss knows that I love my job and I will be sure to let him know anyway. I would just like his professional opinion on my resume to make sure that it is the best it can be. So what do you all think? Should I or shouldn't I.

hehe, I asked my supervisor if I could get a reference from her and I ended up with a $2.75/hr raise.

Depends on what your working relationship is with the boss but even with the best relationship, I would say, at best there's a 10% chance that it is a good idea. As far as resumes go, anything over 3 pages, including cover letter, get tossed in the trash. Best is 1 page + cover letter.

I would think it best to let someone other than your boss (or anyone else in your company, or in contact with your company) look over your resume. At least until you have a healthy job offer in your hand. Once another company makes an offer, THEN talk to your boss. You might end up with something like furball got, or you might end up having to take the other company up on their offer.

Some companies will let you go if they even THINK you are considering looking for another job. Or, they will hope that you don't find out what you are worth elsewhere. Still others just don't care.

Review of your resume- Good Idea

Your boss doing it- BAD idea

IMO you should keep the fact that you are job-hunting confidential. If you're looking for a raise, then get a solid job offer first. Show that to your boss and challenge him to match it. At least you will already have a backup plan in place.
What if the boss thinks you will go to work for the competition? What if he feels betrayed?
What has happened when other employees have resigned? Some people are very understanding, some are very vendictive (sp?), don't risk your income to find out.

Your co-worker's attitude towards you may change dramatically if they think you are about to jump ship. Even if they like you. Even if you like them.

I agree with the rest of the answers - all good advice.

Thanks for all the advice. I guess I should have let you all know that I am in a union so I definitely wouldn't be walking away with a raise. And I also wouldn't have to worry about my job security either. All that is clearly defined in the union contract. My only concern is my boss might have a different opinion of me. We are not friends outside of work, but professionally, we have a good work relationship. So asking his opinion on my resume is probably not a good idea. Maybe I can just have my co-workers look at it. I am not the only one thinking about leaving NY. There are many others I know with the same thoughts as me. I would feel a lot better knowing what my options are. Right now, my company is being bought out by another company so, who knows what the future holds. By the way I work for a utility (electric and gas). I like my job but all the politics are getting to be a bit much. Thanks for all your input!

I would not do it.... As you state, you are worried about your boss’s opinion.

When people have asked me to look over their resume or write letters of rec. they may say it is just for keeping you on their portfolios, but it is more likely they want to jump ship.

Why would you want to move if you like your job. I learned the hard way money is not always better. The grass that is greener on the other side of the fence is sometimes nothing more than green painted concrete.
