Disc Brake Swap

I know it's been said many times before, however finding it is another issue. Real quick-I am looking for the upgrade to the discs on my 65 F100. Several donor trucks (72 F100, 75 F150's) in the salvage yard offering non power assist and power assist. If I have the spindles off any of these items, I should be good to go from there. Correct???

Mike, if you will look at the posting on "power steering" about 50 posts below yours you will see how I described the way that I did my 65 F100, as far as finding an article on this subject, if you will go into Tech Articles and scroll down to 1997 Articles you will find an excellent article there by Ken Payne that I believe should be considered the benchmark on disc brake conversions for our years of trucks.Above all BE SAFE, have fun and don't hesitate to ask questions if there's something you don't understand, those of us that have done this were all in your position at one time.

Disc Brake Swap

When getting started on this swap, the easiest thing to do is simply get the I-Beams with spindles, stone guard, bearings attached. Then do the King pins and disks, calipers, clening and painting on the bench. Then slip a completed assembly under your truck. I also suggest you get a set of progressivly wound coils from www.eatonsprings.com . The brake booster, MC, pedal linkage, stop light and other stuff can be collected and lined up for this project and you can swap it all in in a good weekend. A mustang firewall boot will work if you need one. 100% Ford parts all available in the Junk Yard. Post back with questions. This is one of the most diccussed topics on this forum and we learn new tricks every day.

Disc Brake Swap

William and Bill:
Thanks for the input. I found a donor 76 F100 that has all the goodies in place and in good shape except for it is not power assist. I will need to pull the complete front end as the pins are in tight. Also have a 75 willing to donate the power unit to my cause. Several other 250's in the salvage yard, I think they will supply the hard lines to the front disks...

Mike, I use the old steel lines as a pattern only. Buy some new line and a flaring kit from Sears. Learn how to do the double flare and make new lines. Its fun, entertaining and a skill you will need as you complete this project. About the booster from the 75. Should be the 9 inch. Look for the step bracket that raises the booster up away from the valve covers. The push rod should be flat stock verses a rod. Grab the pedal and bushings and stop light from the 75 as well. Ain't this fun! Learned to drive on a Farmall A. Fond memories of back home on the farm.

Disc Brake Swap

I'm also hoping to do this shortly, but I actually don't want power brakes. Can I do the disc swap and use a dual circuit MANUAL brake master cylinder, and is it a more straight forward bolt-on? I know the power ones you usually need to shorten the pedal rod. Did they make a manual disc brake master cylinder?
