Just installed a Ford 400 [1973 LTD Engine] into my 1963 F-100 with C-6 automatic. Problem is, I goofed on the length of the driveshaft and now I'm about 1 3/4 inch shorter than I like. Whats are some thoughts on cutting the tube and adding in the 1 3/4 inch. I'm not on the road just yet because I only have probably, a couple of inches, of yoke tubeing [spline] going into the transmission. Anyone have any experience on this type of problem with drive shafts? Ever heard of a longer yoke shaft? Maybe something like a 7inch? Any shared experiences along these lines would be much appericiated. Many thanks to all.
May be of some help.I have a 66 short box with 400/c/6 and I used a driveshaft from a 1984 t/bird.Had to find a yoke from a c/6 trans with small u/joint cups,as t/bird shaft has wrong yoke.Fit fine for lenth. Also,if you can,it is possible to move motor/trans to front or rear in chassis also helps.
there are some different length yokes for the rearend also. Some of the mid 70's trucks had a longer yoke but the u-joint cup may be a different size requiring a special $20 hybrid u-joint. It should be about a 1" change. Not sure if this is enough to fix your problem.

Thanks for the food for thought. I appeiciate it.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Dec-02 AT 11:49 PM (EST)]I just measured what I needed and went to a junk yard and found one. I believe that it was the rear section of a 2 piece driveshaft. I just got the correct u-joints and installed the C6 yoke. Works great. And my u-joints were $6.99 each. Just depends on what drive shaft you get. Mine was a bit smaller on the u-joint ends than the one that came in the truck.
I moved my rear axle forward about 1 1/4" when I made the same mistake. Just drilled a 5/16 hole at the rear of the spring pad and one in the top plate. Removed the spring pack bolt lined it all up and put a grade 8 bolt allthe way through the spring pad, spring pack, and top plate. It made the wheel look better with it just a little more forward in the wheel well.
