My 86' has gone through 2 switchs in 2 years the last time the actuating
arm/rod was bent so i straightened it out and worked for a year. At this point the truck wont start with the colum tilted up and is getting harder to get to the start position. My question is i would like to put in a push button ignition as this is mostly a ranch truck
any ideas or comments.
We had two old grain dump trucks that were wired that way because the keys kept getting lost. We had a toggle on/off power switch and a momentary push button starter switch, worked great.
If your key switch still works for off/run, I would leave it wired for that to help prevent theft and only wire up the momentary push button starter switch. Just remember that depending on how you wire the momentary push button starter switch it could disable any saftey devices (ie. clutch switch, nuetral switch) and the truck could start in gear, the grain trucks would.
The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago and I installed a push button switch as a temporary measure. Temporary turned out to be about 18 months untill I got round to replacing the actuator ( about $6.00 from Ford ). The starter relay is on the right side inner wheel arch just behind the battery tray. Unplug the single wire from the ign switch and plug on the new wire from the new push button and away you go. When feeding 12v to the new switch make sure you put in a inline fuse.
I would replace the rod but it's 107 deg. here and don't feel like pulling the steering wheel. Besides, just recieved word my no driving daughter backed
into a building at 20 mph and totaled the bed! Looks like a flat bed is in my future. Already checked out the link on building your own. God i love this web site!
i added an over ride glowplug push button to lite 'em longer & a starter switch on the side of the console. now the drill is turn key to run hold button for 10 sec when cold then hold switch down til' she fires or 20 sec then repeat.
I pulled switch off topside of lower collum and mounted it under lower edge of dash and use a 16p nail toslide switch start. When switch burns out each year it only takes 2-3 minits to change out.
