I often require to leave my Expy running idle, in the hot summer I rather do this than letting it get steaming hot inside....I know U get 0 MPG when idling, but does anyone know the fuel usage when idlling in terms of gallons per minute or other similar measurement?
The only way I know to calculate that would be to fill up the truck, move it to a parking spot and let it idle for an hour or so, then fill it up again and see how much it used. You can't drive the truck for this period as that would throw off the numbers. Then use the time you let it idle and the gallons you put in to find out how much fuel it uses.
though being that this is a fuel injected vehicle, you'd need two. One on the fuel line and one on the return line, then subtract the fuel rate on the return line from the fuel rate going to the engine. It's a pretty spendy option at $325 a piece.
Try looking around the web, maybe you can find something that's not aircraft grade that would do the same for cheaper.
fill her up, drive 20 miles or so on a stretch of freeway at a near constant speed, re-fill to see what you used. then do the same thing again but idle her for 30-60 minutes after the same drive and then fill her up again to see what the difference was from the first fill-up. that'll give you an idea.
i've seen my mpg drop quickly (like 1/10 of a mile every sec or two) on my overhead computer at stoplights soon after computer resets, so it may be more than you'd think.
Hey, I have one of those! It shows my truck at .9 to 1 GPH at idle most of the time. My 01 Mustang shows .7 to .9 GPH.
On a side note, I had to pull into traffic and get moving quick like the other day with the trailer in tow. I glanced down and it showed 17.4 GPH. It may have gone higher
