best timing for milage
and will taller tires give me better milage per gallon? the 11 I get now is startin to kill me pants pockets!!!
You didn't mention whether it was fuel injected or carbed, but I would think retarding the timing would help a bit. The EFI 302 is supposed to be set at 10 Before Top Dead Center, I don't even know if it can be retarded, but if you can set it at 6 or even 8 you might notice a difference.
I am not sure if taller tires would make much of a difference. I don't see how you can gain any. My 1989 originally had 235/75R15's and now it has 31's and it still gets around 15mpg's. I consider that good for a 12 year old 4x4.

302,with a edelbrok performer intake feeding thru a holley 600 cfm with vacume sceondaries. also have a point ignition on it. hopefully be a HEI soon!
thanks. current timing is around 13degrees 6degrees she doesn;t like much
The timing that will give you the best mileage and best performance is to advance it until it starts to ping going up hill at 30 miles an hour or so, in fourth. Retarding it will make mileage worse, increase heat in the engine and will hurt performance.
The bigger tires can give you better mileage, you go farther per revolution of the tire.
Diameter x pi = circumference
30in = 30 x 3.1416 = 94.25 inches
33in = 33 x 3.1416 = 103.675 inches per rev.
But you can go to big in that it is harder to get the truck moving trying to rotate bigger tires unless you change the gear ratio.

I just rotate the distributor a little at a time in the same direction as the rotor turns. Then go pull a hill or put in 4th and step on it hard from a low speed, if it doesn't ping, advance it some more until it does then back it up just a hair and you'll be set. Leave the vacuum hooked up while you're doing this and once you have it set then remove and plug the vacuum line and check the timing with a light then you'll know were it's at and be able to reset it at anytime.

Have a correction on the direction to rotate the distributor, turn it the opposite direction of the way the rotor turns will advance the timing. Turning it in the same direction delays the spark as the piston gets closer to top dead center. Turning it in the opposite cause the plug to fire that much earlier before top dead center.
Sorry for the miss leading info, but you can time it "by ear" with out a light, and once you have eliminated any pinging after all efforts to get it to ping have been tried, then check it with a light with the vaccuum disconnected.
Should you change the timing, as SLIKNESS stated, for towing, you can do the same procedure of rotating the distributor until it quits pinging under hard acceleration with the load, then check the timing with a light and vaccuum disconnected. You will now have found where your engine will run it's best under a load like towing and unloaded as around town, that is until you change things on the engine, even changing makes of gasoline can change where yor engine likes it's timing.
