I am stumped--it's bugging me like a gnat. Last week when I filled up I had half of a qtr of a tank and put 31.6 gallons in. Today I had half a tank and put 20.6 gallons in. Per the specs I have a 29 gallon tank (not harpooned) Back when I fisrt got the truck a ran it to E and only could get 27 gallons in. Now I know with the truck bed and the way it was engineered to use the stock filler location I have a few gallons extra (maybe more or less haven't done the math) but all of this just isn't computing--maybe im just too dense to get it.
The pump was obviously not properly calibrated, you should go back and complain, now way a 29 gallon tank takes that much fuel. Even if I run mine near empty I can only get in 120 liters, right to the top. I can tell how much mine will be by fuel gauge so I know if there is a bad pump....

You know I never thought about that---funny thing is I've been using the same station amd pump since I bought the truck--and thinking about it my milage has gone down about the same time I noticed the tank "growing" I think I will try another station next just to see what happens--should be interesting. See I told you I was a bit slow---you guys think of everything.
Also wondering if I got my info wrong as to what size tank I have. It's the aft axle one and could have sworn I found where it was 29 gallons. All the ones I hwve found if I were to buy a new one are 40 gallons. Just looking at the fill up today I would say the pump is off by 6 gallons on the fill up which would match my original mpgs.
Yup, they can be a long way out because they are quote "temperature corrected". They need to be calibrated on a regular basis. I know on mine, at E, I can get in about 100 liters, 1/4 I can get in 76 liters, 1/2 about 50 liters, up to the point the pump stops the first time. Then I can often get another 7 - 10 liters to the filler neck. When I am filling and then driving I often top it to within about 3 inches of the top of the filler. Try a commercial fuel station, see what you get for a fill from 1/2 or 1/4. I never go less than 1/4 unless I know I am going to stop and fuel and drive again......

Roger that--that's why I filled up today since we may get some winter stuff tomorrow evening and Monday. I have always wondered if there would be any problem filling up on the side where the big rigs fill up--don't guess it would be of issue?
I think they are supposed to have a sticker on the pump, when it was last tested or calibrated, and by who. At least that's how it is in Oregon, but we're not allowed to pump our own gas...
Short beds are 29 gallons
Long Beds are 38 gallons

Yep cab chassu
Yep cab chassis aft axle tank. That's what I was thinking after just recently looking. I wonder if the sendor or something could be off. Even running it dow to the low fuel comes on previously the most I could put in was 28 gallons. The last full fill I had more fuel in the tank then that and put 31 in it. I guess when the low fuel comes on I have way more miles to go then I think. Can these systems be calibrated? this think is driving me batty.
The diesel foams. That is especially an issue with a really empty tank vs a half full one. Check you VIN for what tanks it's supposed to have? I wonder if this is part of your issue too. I wish I had 40 gallons of capacity.
Ford should make it an option to have two tanks in a short bed, on on each side of the drive shaft, protected by the Fram and skid plates. My dads 1979 1 ton had a great switch from tank to tank, so the gauge read and everything. Way slicker than a tank in the bed taking up space. I think those tanks are smaller, like 20 amd 20 or so gallons but still, 40 total. It will not go far though cause it's a 400 gasser, now it's got a few things done to it to open her up, so she goes through the gas LOL.

I do get alot of foaming once it gets to the neck but subsides quickly.
On the vin I had thought it said 29 but looking at it it seems way bigger ill have to recheck. It looks exactly like the one that was in my Bronco (it was 32 gallon) My truck does just have the one tank and did seem strange to me to have just 29 gallon tank. I wonder if thats why my scangauge mpg average is low as well (wrong size tank plugged in)
My trucks fuel gauge has never been great. It stays on Full for 100 miles, the top half last way longer than the lower half, and even on empty it seems to go and go and go. I've never run it dry, although I've often thought I had to be close.
Bottom line I don't really trust the fuel gauge. The Ex has a 44 gallon tank anyway so I've never really had to worry about getting from point A to B.

Every Ford I have owned or driven has acted like that. It's a Ford thing in the the way they OHM out the fuel sender.
