my 05 supercrew has 35000 miles. my air conditioner is taking spells where it wants to blow hot air instead of cold. this will happen alot when stopping at stop lights. the freon is ok the system checks out to be ok. does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong? last winter it did he same with heat turning cold.
If the A/C does not work at idle it could be that the compressor is week. I had mine replaced under warenty at 20,000. as for the heat turning cold I have no idea. Do you have the climate control or regular A/C and heat controls?
Mine does the same thing. I had the dealer evac and recharge the system and it helped some, but it does the same thing yours is doing. The best it works is on the highway at higher constant speeds. Ford told the dealer to check the system at 2500 rpms with max a/c. Thing that ford ingores is I was running at 2500 in O/d I would be getting speeding tickets. Its a crappy design a/c system. I wish I had my 2002 back, that would freeze ice cubes.
I have an 06. It has two issues. It will be blowing cool then it tends to cut out and blow hot. I have guy that works with me who has a 3 week old 06. He says the air is just barely cool.
I need to take mine back to ford for the second time for this problem. If not, I am going to take it to a local a/c shop. Even if it cost me 100-200 dollars, if it fixes the thing it will be worth it.
I dont like to run it in max (i like fresh air), but that is the only way it cools.
My 04 is the same way have had it in 2 times everything checks out so they say isn't worth the powder to blow it to hell my 03 camry makes it look sick think ford has problems in the new design trucks but will not own up to it no surprise there!!
Your 1k under warranty if you dont have an ESP. Get it in and let the dealer worry about it. Make sure they document it also that way when you go over 36K you can still bring it back if they do not fix it correctly the first time.
Back in my HVAC days that symptom would be classic of low refrigerant gas. You say that was checked and is fine. Another one said same symptom and had the system evacuated (vacuum sucked down) and then charged to specs I would imagine.
The next thing needing to be checked for is a dirty expansion valve. You do not really clean these, you just replace them.
Now if you have a climate control system then the first thing I would be looking to run the diagnostics on that or replacing it.
My 04 scab was delivered low on freon from the factory. After having the dealer check it twice right after I bought it, they finally evac and recharged the system. This helped, but its still not what I would consider a strong ac system. If your sitting at a light, the air will start to blow warmer and warmer. If you rev up the engine its starts to cool off again but the people sitting at the light next to you want to know why your blowing exhaust fumes all over them. Its just another example of ford cuttin corners.
I don't know about you all, but my 2005 just doesn't seem to blow like REALLY cold air.. My dads 01 doesn't seem to either I don't know what it is though.. and when it's 102 degrees, I want some COLD air..
When I first got my truck the A/C would freez you out of the cab (04 SCREW XLT). When I started to use the A/C this summer it no longer worked as well. I took it back to the dealer and they said the compressor was weak and replaced it. That helped some initially. At max A/C with the blower on high and 100 degrees outside the vent temperature was 40 degrees. Not great but OK. Now a month later the best it will do is 50 degrees. I can get 40 degrees out of it but I have to set the A/C on max and the fan on 3. I intend to take it back to the dealer soon. One of the reasons I liked this truck so much was the realy cold A/C. The temp in my area durring the sumer is around 105 degrees every day. 50 degrees at the vent does not cut it when it's that hot outside.

I live on the east coast...Philly to be exact. I also spent 6 years Living in Long Beach, CA. 105 Degrees in the Southwest is like the fall compared to what a 90 degree day on the east coast feels like with the humidity pushing 70+%. With that Said...Living in the Northeast I have never once checked to see what my temperature at my vent is. I do know it is more then comfortable when set on MAX and givin the proper time to cool down. Thing is...chances are Your AC will not get colder then 40º ± 2º. Why Should it? Its an A/C not a Freezer. It is designed to cool the occupants off...not store Deli Meats and cheeses.
Essentially all the "MAX" Setting on your AC does is gives you and extra Kick in the Blower Speed and Recirculates the inside cabin air. If you do not have your AC set on Max and you do not manually click the recirc button then you are bringing in 105º outside air into the cabin to be cooled by the a/c so yeah...guess what...it probably will be around 50º.
In the R134a day and age...you will be very lucky to see a 50º temp differential from the air coming in to the air coming out. A 40º temp differential is actually acceptable. But you will not see the cooling difference like you did with R12. Those Days are over with. R134 does not get as cold as R12 nor does it remove the Heat as efficiently as R12 did.
With that said if you do not accept the cooling of your AC then the only thing I can suggest is getting a very large inverter for your truck and installing a 5000 BTU window unit in the passenger side door.
