1965 e-100 steering problem

Hi, I've got a 65 e-100 van that I've been doing a lot of work on. It's my daily driver and I love it! One thing that's been a problem since I got it on the road has been that the steering seems real squirley. I imagined it would be a little weird with everything being on top of the front axle like it is, but the front end is all over the place. Before I dig in, and have to be off the road for a while, could anybody point me in the right direction as to what it might be?
Thanks

#1 alignment. is it ok?
#2 is the steering box good and tight, or is it sloppy?
#3 how are the tie rods and drag link?
#4 how are the kingpins?

i would jack 1 front wheel up and see if i had slack in the steering components by turning the wheel front to back. all you have to do is rock it back and forth to see if anything is loose. let someone rock the steering wheel and look at everything including the steering box it self. i have seen them work loose.

while you have it jacked up, try to move the wheel in and out on the top and bottom. if it moves it probably has worn out kingpins.

email or pm me if you have any questions about any of this.

My 64 E truck had the same problem. Stabilizer bolts and bushing were replaced. That helped, but I found the problem to be woren out Kingpins.
Have the van on stands on the axle. Have someone grab the top and bottom of the tire and push them back and forth. While you look at the kingpin. If you see even the slightest movement at the top or bottom they need replacement. It is amazing how that small movement can make the van rove all over the road.

I-beam front ends often get vague when the springs relax with age and the caster gets decreased. An alignment and some wedges between the springs and axle will fix it.

I have a '65 Falcon window van, and ended up replacing tie rod ends and the center link, off the shelf at Schucks/Checker. The steering box was another story...I finally found one at pro-steering (dot) com. Drives like a dream now.
