Howdy. I've got a '71 F250 that I installed a 7.3 IDI into years ago. It's been a great, reliable combo, but recently I decided to put some work into it and fix some bugs. One being the power steering was always too easy and has almost no road feel at all. Does anyone know if the CII Ford pump can be modified to reduce pressure and improve road feel or if there's a fluid I can use to achieve this? Maybe some of you with EFI or diesel conversions on 2wd trucks like mine have run into this?
Seems to me I've read something on this years ago. If you remove the fitting in the side of the pump, in there is the flow control valve. Check ball(s) and a spring. You would have to Google this to find out what to do with that spring to alter flow. I would assume diesel pumps are set at higher flow. But Ford doesn't do a good job of listing this spring. They want to sell whole pumps not parts. So I could only find a couple listings. Truck and LTD 1980 and up. Both listed the same spring. So maybe diesel's pumps have the same flow as cars.

D8AZ-3D586-A .. Spring-P/S Pump Flow Control Valve ~ Use with Ford C-II plastic reservoir P/S pump.
1978/89 FoMoCo Passenger Cars / 1978/89 F100/350 & Bronco. I assume you have access to 1990 and later car/truck parts catalogs, cuz I'd rather not squint at microfiche.
Yep. I checked a few other vehicles like Ranger and such. IF Ford gave me a parts list to look in I came up with the same part number you did.
That made me look at the 3a561 flow valve. There is where the difference is. Trucks took a truck number (E6TZ3A561A). I found LTD number E1AZ3A561A and 1986 (personal sports luxury car) Lincoln Mark part number E6LY3A561A. This is the part he wants IMHO. Marks of that body style had performance style steering rather than LTD pinky style. I will run it on locators in a minute.
Here you go bigfootsurfin. I can't guarantee how different the steering will be but this is my suggestion. There are no dealers that have it in the Hang Ten state but numerous in the country. The best and closest to you is Kinsel Lincoln Mercury in Texas. They play well with others.
E6LY3A561A flow valve kit. Last known list price was $29.73.
E1AZ3D684A oil ring seal kit. Still available from Ford but you might as well get it same place.
Kinsel Lincoln Mercury...1-800-816-2894. Tell Gina that Jeff from Berge Ford told you to call her.
OP could buy the parts from an FTE Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsor, save some bucks. Closest to NorCal would be horizonpartsguy.com (Horizon Ford Truck Center) in Seattle WA
