ok important thing to know for certain because i really dont know which engine is in my truck its an 85 f250 xl but i really dont know which engien it is i am used to small japanese engines, so this is just a big diesel to me so far. what do i look for to tell the engien difference?
If it painted gray, rattles and smokes than most likely you got the 6.9l Ford Diesel. The Engine is actually a International diesel engine Ford started using in their pick-up trucks in 1983.
It is a bullet proof engine that will last you a long time. A lot of guys I know have run them for 400k to 500k without any major work needed. Change the oil and filters and drive.
They can have a few issues with cold starting, just post your problems and somebody will help you figure out what needs fixing.
What is your tranny (std or auto)? Both trannies in the 85 were good trannies.
well it might have been gray at some point but its black and oil now it smokes but it has/had a blown head gasket which i am fixing right now.
and its an automatic
Look for an identifier tag on the drivers side rocker cover. Maybe it is still there under the oil and grease.
If your engine is a V8 Diesel it would definetely be the 6.9l International Engine as that was the only diesel Ford offered in their pick-up trucks in 1985.
Your transmission would be a C6 which is generally highly regarded as a very reliable transmission.
Hp would be around 170 Hp with 315 ft-lb of torque.
someone may have changed engines before you bought it but ... as long as you have the head off, you can look at the head bolt, the 6.9 head bolt is 7/16 bolt about 5.25 inches long and the 7.3 bolt is 1/2 " thick and 6 inches long.
the 7.3 heads have a strength rib where the lower head bolts go thru. It looks like it is used to contain water near the head bolt.
it should serve you well with a good maintainance program. be sure to use coolant additive to prevent cylinder wall erosion ... napa calls it napaCool and caterpillar calls it nalcool.
well its definatly a 6.9 then. cylinder wall erosion? coolant pasages from the inside? there wasnt any antifreeze in it and lots of rusty water probably not to far along i hope i will take not of that when it works again.
