I have a 1984 Ford Bronco. Depending on the pump, it is usually tricky getting my tank filled up without the shut off valve always shutting off on me. At the Casey's in town, which I noticed has longer pump nozzles, it is impossible for me to get more than a few gallons in tops. Does anyone else have this issue around this year of bronco? Is this a case of a bad vent tube or just the way the tank is in the '84? Thanks for your comments.
I've had this problem where the gas backs up and then goes over your feet. I half solved it by sliding a block of wood between the large rubber hose and the bottom of the body between the filler hole and the tank. I think the hose runs slightly uphill so you get an air lock and the tank can't vent. PITA I know - especialy at the cost of gas in the UK!
take a look at the fill tube going from the tank. does your bronco have a body lift? try to not put the nozzle in so far
My Bronco is not lifted. I've tried not putting the nozzle in so far (you can give me a little more credit than that). It works if I am using a shorter nozzle and pump the gas slow, but it'll usually shut off a lot before I get it filled up. Like I said, if it is a longer nozzle like that one at Casey's in my town, I can't get more than a few gallons no matter how far I pull it out. That's too bad because their super unleaded gas runs cheaper than most places. I just wanted to check if it was a problem that some of you were pretty familiar with and whether a new part (like the vent tube) would fix the problem. I'll see if I can take a closer look at it today when I get off work.
Check to see if your fill tube is kinked any, I had a 76 F150 and it happened all the time so all I did was put a 3-4" ring clamp in the kinked spot and tightened it enough to get rid of the kink. No problems after that.
LadyB, that is a common problem due to a kinked vent tube. I have a pic of the one from my 84 at SFO, will try to post a link. You don't have to drop the tank, just pull out the filler neck and the inner, plastic tube should come out with it. JSM84

Ladybronco, there is a mod for the filler neck that alot of diesel truck owners have done and it helps with fueling up fast. The mod should work on your tank, which is the same as the rear tank on a truck. The mod is not hard to do and helps alot. Check out this site (I know it's for diesel trucks) go about halfway down and find " High Speed Filler Neck for $40". You just need the info for the rear tank.
This company sells pre-made filler neck kits. They have a picture of their modifide filler neck, so you can see what yours should look like when done. If you don't want to do it yourself, the one for the 87-97 (bottom of page) gas pick-up rear tank should work. http://www.transferflow.com/ford_fillneck_kits.html
I have the problem with my 78 too, but the previous only put a larger (33G) tank and I think it squishes the hose up higher. I will put the nozzle just barely in through the hole and only click it half way. Works just fine 75% of the time, depending on the pump.
eva, just stand at the pump and look cute, there is always a guy out there ready to impress a girl let them pump it for ya! let them smell like gas! hehe (just alil humor) justshootme i think he hit the nail on the head

Not bad advice Huckster. I'll keep that in mind until I get it fixed.
My solution is to lock the pump handle on the slowest setting then clean the windows and check all of the fluids while it's pumping away. By the time I am done with all of that, the tank is just about full.
