rear differential...
I don't know what to think about these damn escapes...nice vehicle,but I'm having my fair share of problems...besides doing the rear wheel bearings and one front bearing,I noticed some filings in my rear diff. when I changed oil the other day(2001 V6 4x4...65000miles)I just bought it so I don't know if it had been changed before...sure didn't look like it!!the 'oil' was thick and 'sludgy'...it looked awful,so I changed it,drove for a few weeks and checked it again...it's not as thick and sludgy as before,but the oil again went to a grey color and i did notice some filings again on the diff plug...anybody have problems similar?oh,and the rear end seems to be a little noisy(howl) after about 95 km/hr and up...and I know it's not the wheel bearings cause there new! Did you use the correct type of fluid? The gray color is generally contaminates being foamed out of the oil. water, additives, dirt etc.
The diff is a gearbox, so there will be filings in it, gears always wear a little.

I checked my rear differential fluid yesterday and it was okay; appeared clean and clear after the first 7,000 miles. However, there was alot of black sludge stuck to the magnet on the filler plug, which surprised me. I have never seen this much fillings/black sludge on any vehicle differential I have owned before, most of them 4X4s.

I used the reccomended oil(I used Castrol brand)I think I might go to a synthetic once I change oil again in a few weeks...I figure for the little it costs, doing a few repetitive 'flushes' wouldn't hurt...definately very sludgy on my filler plug magnet as well...Brent M
