Power antenna problem

I noticed my mother's 98 explorer the power antenna is only partly working. It seems to go up ok, but stops when it still has about 4" to go. Sometimes it goes back down, sometimes you just hear the motor running and it won't go without a little push. Is this thing shot or can I fix it? Do I have to get a new antenna from a dealer or is it available locally? Worst case, can I pull a fuse so it stays up all the time?

For a garage kept, well maintaned car, this thing sure has a lot of stupid little stuff break on it alot. Now I have to get the wheels off, some knucklehead at the dealer put them on too tight, I can't budge a lug nut with 120psi and a snap-on impact wrench. Time to sharpen my air chisel.

Our 97 explorer had both of the problems yours is having. The antenna acted funny for a couple of weeks then just quit working all together. I can raise it manually but when I try to push it down it won't go all the way in. It stays up about a foot or so but the radio still works fine.
When we got a flat fixedthey had 2 of the lug nuts too tight. I just went ahead and broke the studs off. They were easy to replace. I had studs break on my 99 Ranger also.

It sounds like the cable is broken on your antenna.
I replaced mine with out too much difficulty.
You can get one off the internet, and they are the real deal. About $25.00.
Detailed instructions come with the part, along with a hot-line for advise.
I installed mine in about an hour.
It includes taking the front passenger side wheel off and removing the screws that hold the rubber wheel well in place.
Consider using a good penetrating oil on the studs, spraying them for a couple of days while you wait for your part.
Good luck!

Looks like Gordo has your answer for only 25 bucks.

But if you just want to pull the fuse, fuse 1 interior fuse panel is for power antenna & power mirrors on a 97. Probably the same on yours, but check the fuse list in your owners manual.
